Chapter 17 - The Check

Near the end of dinner, a server approached me carrying a black folder.
My stomach dropped.
Then Tessa burst out laughing.
“Mom, open it.”
Inside was a fake restaurant bill.
TOTAL: $5,217.86.
Below it were the words:
PAID IN FULL — WITH INTEREST.
I looked at my daughter.
“What is this?”
She handed me an envelope.
Inside were two plane tickets for a vacation I had postponed for years.
“Absolutely not.”
“Absolutely yes.”
“Tessa—”
“You spent five thousand dollars that night because you realized protecting me mattered more than proving a point.”
“I got most of it back.”
“Not the point.”
She hugged me.
“You gave me a way out without telling me which way to go.”
That sentence meant more to me than the tickets ever could.
Across the room, Vivian watched us.
Then she approached.
“I owe you something too.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“If it’s another restaurant bill, I’m leaving.”
She laughed.
Actually laughed.
Then she handed me a check covering the portion of the original dinner expense that had not already been refunded.
“I should have done this a year ago.”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”
“No.”
May you like
“Good.”
And for the first time, we understood each other.
