Chapter 18 - One Year Later

A year after the wedding, Tessa called me early on a Sunday.

“Mom?”

I knew immediately something had happened.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

She laughed.

“Nothing is wrong.”

Then she told me she was pregnant.

I cried.

Caleb cried.

Richard cried.

Rebecca booked a flight.

Vivian?

Vivian asked one question.

“When are you comfortable having visitors?”

When Tessa told me that, I had to sit down.

People rarely transform overnight.

Real change is quieter.

It appears in the question someone chooses to ask instead of the assumption they once would have made.

Vivian didn’t choose the nursery.

She didn’t announce the name.

She didn’t plan the baby shower.

She waited.

When Tessa asked for help, Vivian gave it.

When she wasn’t asked, she stayed back.

And months later, when their daughter was born, Tessa surprised everyone.

She asked Vivian to come into the hospital room.

Vivian approached the baby slowly.

“She’s beautiful.”

Tessa smiled.

“Would you like to hold her?”

Vivian looked at Tessa before reaching out.

“May I?”

One tiny question.

May you like

Two words.

But I knew exactly how far she had traveled to learn to ask them.
