Chapter 10 - Ethan's Last Package

Claire's storage unit was in Hoboken.
She hadn't visited in eleven months.
Dominic drove.
Claire sat beside him holding Lily, who had become increasingly irritated by the adults' inability to provide a normal routine.
“You could stay with Sophia,” Claire told her.
Lily stared.
“You could.”
Lily placed both hands on Dominic's arm.
Dominic glanced down.
Claire sighed.
“Fine. Betrayal.”
Dominic almost smiled.
Adrian sat in the front passenger seat.
“She likes him.”
“Don't encourage it,” Dominic said.
“Why?”
“Because eventually she will discover better judgment.”
Lily leaned against Dominic.
Adrian laughed.
“Not today.”
The storage facility manager opened the unit.
Boxes filled the small room.
Claire stood still.
Her old life.
Ethan's winter coat.
Their wedding decorations.
A lamp they once argued about buying.
Lily's unopened crib mobile.
Grief could live anywhere.
Sometimes it lived inside cardboard.
Dominic noticed Claire's hesitation.
“I can look.”
“No.”
She stepped inside.
“If Ethan left this for me, I find it.”
They searched.
Forty minutes.
Timer:
3:51.
Then Claire found the wooden case.
Locked.
She stared.
“I forgot about this.”
“Key?” Adrian asked.
“No.”
Dominic examined the simple lock.
Adrian looked at him.
“No.”
Dominic ignored him.
“Don't break it,” Claire said.
Dominic handed it back.
“Then what's your solution?”
Claire thought.
Ethan loved puzzles.
He proposed using a scavenger hunt.
He encrypted birthday gifts.
Once he hid her anniversary present inside a cereal box because of a joke only they understood.
She examined the lock.
Four digits.
“Lily.”
Dominic looked at the baby.
Claire typed the due date Ethan had circled on their fertility calendar.
The lock opened.
Claire stopped breathing.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
A photograph.
And a small memory card.
Claire unfolded the letter.
Claire,
If you're opening this because I forgot to tell you about it, remind me never to hide birthday presents again.
She laughed through tears.
Then continued.
The next lines were different.
If you're opening it because something happened to me, I am sorry.
Claire sat on the floor.
Dominic crouched nearby, Lily in his arms.
Claire read silently.
Ethan explained the investigation.
Victor.
The financial network.
His fears.
Then:
I didn't tell you because I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the danger. If I was wrong, forgive me.
Claire covered her mouth.
Dominic looked away.
The words struck him too.
Protecting people through silence.
Exactly what his father had done.
Exactly what Dominic did.
Claire continued reading.
If we have a child someday, tell her I wanted her before I ever knew her.
Claire began crying.
Lily looked concerned.
Dominic shifted the child closer.
Claire read the final line aloud.
“Don't let fear become the thing that decides your life.”
She closed the letter.
For a minute nobody rushed her.
Then she inserted the memory card into a secure tablet.
One video.
One spreadsheet.
One audio recording.
The spreadsheet contained transfers connecting Victor to the garage that serviced Ethan's car.
The audio recording was a phone call.
Victor's voice.
You don't understand what you're involving yourself in.
Ethan answered.
Then explain it.
Walk away.
No.
You have a wife, Ethan. Think about her.
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan's answer:
That's exactly why I'm not walking away.
The recording ended.
Dominic's jaw tightened.
Enough for conspiracy.
Enough for threat.
Maybe enough to connect Victor to the tampering.
But the video contained something else.
Ethan appeared.
“This is for Claire.”
She watched.
“If I don't come home tonight, Daniel Reeves has the first evidence.”
Claire looked toward Daniel's old drive.
Ethan continued.
“The second part concerns Victor Hale.”
He held up documents.
“And the final part concerns Dominic Valente.”
Dominic stiffened.
Claire glanced at him.
Ethan continued.
“I don't believe Dominic is involved.”
Dominic exhaled slowly.
“But Victor is preparing to frame him.”
The video showed internal records.
Then Ethan said something unexpected.
“Victor's plan depends on Dominic protecting the Valente name.”
Adrian looked at Dominic.
Ethan continued.
“If Dominic publicly admits the original fraud, Victor loses his leverage.”
Claire stared.
Dominic had done exactly that hours earlier.
Ethan had predicted the solution two years ago.
Then came the final revelation.
“There's a master shutdown code embedded in the first transaction Daniel Valente authorized.”
Adrian moved.
“Dad's transaction.”
Dominic called the cyber team.
They searched the original records unlocked at the lighthouse.
Found the earliest transaction.
A reference number.
Sixteen digits.
Entered into Victor's release portal.
Rejected.
Timer:
2:42.
Claire replayed Ethan.
“Embedded.”
Not the transaction ID itself.
Maybe metadata.
Adrian examined the record.
Date.
Amount.
Routing.
Beneficiary.
Dominic noticed a pattern.
The transfer amount:
$2,114,198.6.
February 11, 1986.
“What's that date?” Claire asked.
Adrian stared.
“Victor's birthday.”
Dominic typed 02111986.
The portal changed.
SECOND AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED
“Of course,” Adrian said.
“What second?”
Claire searched the file.
A field labeled authorization note:
For the brother I could not publicly name.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Password.
Brother.
He typed:
FRATELLO
Italian for brother.
The screen flashed.
RELEASE CANCELED.
Everyone froze.
Then Adrian laughed.
Claire began crying with relief.
Dominic stared at the screen.
The countdown disappeared.
Victor's bomb was gone.
Marcus called.
“You did it.”
“Yes.”
“Federal team is moving on Victor.”
“Wait.”
“Why?”
Dominic looked at Ethan's video.
“We need him alive and talking.”
Claire's expression hardened.
“He answers for Ethan.”
“Yes.”
They returned to Manhattan.
For the first time in days, there was no countdown.
But the crisis was not over.
Valente Global remained under investigation.
Victor remained free.
And Dominic's father's crimes were public.
The stock dropped thirty-two percent.
News trucks surrounded headquarters.
Board members demanded Dominic temporarily resign.
He didn't resist.
That surprised everyone.
“I'll step aside during the investigation.”
Claire looked at him afterward.
“You love that company.”
Dominic stood near the penthouse window.
“I thought I was the company.”
“And now?”
He looked at Lily playing on the floor.
“Now I think that was the problem.”
Claire stepped beside him.
“You could lose it.”
“Yes.”
“Does that scare you?”
Dominic considered.
“Less than it used to.”
“Why?”
He looked toward her.
The answer hovered.
Then his phone rang.
Marcus.
“We found Victor.”
Dominic straightened.
“Where?”
“His house.”
“Arrested?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Marcus hesitated.
“He's not there anymore.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“What happened?”
“He left a note.”
“For me?”
“Yes.”
Marcus sent a photograph.
Dominic read.
You took the company from me.
I will take something from you.
Claire saw Dominic's face.
“What?”
He turned the phone away.
Too late.
She had already seen.
Her hand found Lily instinctively.
Dominic looked at Marcus.
“Where is Victor?”
“We don't know.”
Then Marcus added:
“But one of our cameras caught his car heading toward Manhattan.”
Dominic looked around the penthouse.
His security.
His people.
Claire.
Lily.
Victor no longer had a company to steal.
So he was coming for something Dominic could not replace.
May you like
And Dominic finally knew exactly what that was.
