Chapter 7 - The Empty Crib

Claire stopped hearing the room.
People spoke.
Marcus shouted instructions into his radio.
Sophia checked the bathroom again as though Lily might somehow appear there.
Adrian moved toward the security screens.
But Claire heard none of it.
She stared at the empty crib.
The blanket she had tucked around Lily twenty minutes earlier was still folded near the mattress.
Her stuffed rabbit lay beside it.
One tiny cream sock rested beneath the rail.
Claire picked it up.
Her entire body began shaking.
“Claire.”
Dominic's voice.
She didn't respond.
He crouched in front of her.
“Look at me.”
She couldn't.
Dominic gently took her shoulders.
“Claire.”
She finally raised her eyes.
“He has my baby.”
“We are getting her back.”
“You don't know that.”
“Yes.”
“How can you say that?”
“Because whoever took Lily needed leverage.”
Tears streamed down Claire's face.
“That is supposed to make me feel better?”
“No.”
Dominic's voice softened.
“It's supposed to make you think.”
She stared.
“They need the drive. That means Lily is valuable to them unharmed.”
Claire pressed the sock against her mouth.
Dominic hated every word he was saying.
But panic would not bring Lily home.
He knew how to survive dangerous negotiations.
Make the other side believe their leverage works.
Never reveal which loss would destroy you.
The problem was Dominic had already lost that advantage.
Everyone in the penthouse knew what Lily meant to Claire.
Worse, Victor probably knew what she had begun to mean to Dominic.
Marcus entered.
“Security footage.”
Dominic stood.
They moved to the monitor room.
At 10:34, the camera outside the nursery showed Sophia leaving.
At 10:37, the feed froze for exactly eleven seconds.
When it resumed, nothing appeared different.
“No one entered,” Adrian said.
Marcus rewound.
“Someone did.”
He zoomed.
At 10:36:52, the nursery door moved less than an inch.
A shadow crossed the lower corner.
Service access.
Dominic turned.
“The wall.”
His penthouse had been remodeled before he purchased it.
Old staff corridors existed behind sections of the interior walls.
Most had been sealed.
Apparently not all.
They opened a hidden maintenance door inside a linen closet.
A narrow corridor ran behind the bedrooms.
Marcus swore.
“Who has plans for this?”
“Building management.”
“Construction contractors.”
“Security.”
“And Victor,” Adrian said.
Dominic looked at him.
“How?”
“He helped negotiate your purchase.”
Of course.
Dominic remembered.
Victor had supervised renovations because Dominic was traveling constantly.
They followed the corridor.
At the end, a service door opened into a stairwell.
The electronic alarm wire had been cut.
Marcus looked furious.
“One of my people helped.”
Dominic nodded.
“Find them later.”
Claire stepped forward.
“We go now.”
Marcus looked at the message.
“Victor hasn't given a location.”
As if summoned, Dominic's phone vibrated.
A map pin.
An abandoned warehouse complex in Brooklyn.
Then another message.
Claire. Drive. No police.
Claire took the phone.
“I'm going.”
Dominic looked at her.
“So am I.”
“He said alone.”
“He'll expect me to ignore that.”
“What if he hurts her because you come?”
“He won't see me.”
Marcus nodded.
“We can approach from the river side.”
Adrian studied the map.
“I know this property.”
Everyone looked at him.
“One of Dad's old freight warehouses.”
Dominic frowned.
“Sold twelve years ago.”
“On paper.”
Adrian opened a corporate record.
“The buyer was a holding company.”
Claire understood.
“Lighthouse.”
“Yes.”
The warehouse belonged to Victor.
The drive to Brooklyn lasted twenty-three minutes.
For Claire, it felt like an entire life.
She sat in the back of a black SUV holding Ethan's flash drive.
Dominic sat beside her.
Neither spoke.
Finally Claire whispered, “What if she is crying?”
Dominic looked at her.
“She probably is.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“She hates strangers.”
“She liked me.”
Despite everything, Claire laughed once through tears.
“Yes.”
Dominic looked toward the window.
“She has questionable judgment.”
Claire wiped her face.
“Dominic.”
He turned.
“If something happens—”
“No.”
“Listen.”
“No.”
“If something happens to me, Lily has a trust.”
“Claire.”
“Sophia knows everything.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“And I need you to—”
“Stop.”
She looked at him.
His control cracked.
Just slightly.
“Nothing is happening to you.”
“You can't guarantee that.”
“Yes, I can.”
“How?”
He didn't answer.
Because he couldn't.
Claire studied him.
The man beside her was not the same man who had opened his study door two nights earlier.
That Dominic viewed her and Lily as an intrusion.
A mystery.
A problem.
This Dominic looked afraid.
Not visibly.
But Claire was beginning to understand his silences.
“You care about her,” she whispered.
Dominic looked away.
Claire didn't press him.
She already knew the answer.
The convoy stopped six blocks away.
Claire transferred to another vehicle.
A microphone was hidden beneath her blouse.
Marcus monitored from a command van.
Dominic and Adrian moved toward the waterfront.
Claire approached alone.
The warehouse door stood open.
Inside, lights illuminated a wide empty floor.
Victor waited.
He wore a dark overcoat.
No smile.
“Claire.”
“Where's Lily?”
“Safe.”
“I want to see her.”
“The drive.”
“I see Lily first.”
Victor sighed.
“You have become unexpectedly difficult.”
“My daughter.”
Victor gestured.
A woman stepped from behind a partition.
She was holding Lily.
Claire almost collapsed.
Lily saw her.
“Mama!”
It was one of the clearest words she had ever spoken.
Claire's heart broke.
“Baby.”
She moved forward.
Victor raised one hand.
“Drive.”
Claire stopped.
“Give her to me.”
“After.”
“You said she wouldn't be hurt.”
“She hasn't been.”
Lily began crying.
Claire wanted to run toward her.
Instead she forced herself to remain still.
“What happened to Ethan?”
Victor's expression changed.
Only slightly.
“I wondered when you would find that file.”
“You knew him.”
“I knew of him.”
“You had his car altered.”
Victor looked almost offended.
“That's a serious accusation.”
“Answer me.”
“You didn't come here for answers.”
“Yes, I did.”
Claire held up the drive.
“This contains everything Ethan found.”
Victor's eyes followed it.
“You want this?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me why he died.”
Victor sighed.
“Your husband was curious.”
Claire's breathing changed.
“He saw information he didn't understand.”
“So you killed him?”
“I didn't say that.”
“You ordered someone to pressure him.”
Victor looked toward Lily.
Claire's blood ran cold.
“Pressure,” he said, “can mean many things.”
Marcus heard everything from the van.
Dominic did too.
His fists tightened.
Adrian touched his arm.
“Wait.”
Dominic wanted to move.
But Lily remained in another person's arms.
Claire continued.
“What is Lighthouse?”
Victor smiled.
“Insurance.”
“Against whom?”
“Everyone.”
“Dominic?”
“Especially Dominic.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
Victor walked closer.
“Because Dominic believes loyalty is something people give him.”
His expression hardened.
“I spent twenty years building his father's company while the Valentes received everything.”
“Then this is revenge?”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“Ownership.”
He held out his hand.
“The drive.”
Claire looked at Lily.
Then tossed it.
Victor caught it.
At that moment, lights went out.
Darkness.
Claire dropped to the floor exactly as Marcus had instructed.
Someone shouted.
Footsteps.
A door slammed.
Lily cried.
Then a man's voice cut through the darkness.
“Claire!”
Dominic.
Emergency lights flashed on.
Claire looked up.
Dominic had reached the woman holding Lily.
The woman released the baby immediately and ran.
Dominic caught Lily before she fell.
Lily screamed.
Then recognized him.
Her crying changed.
Dominic held her tightly.
“I've got you.”
Claire ran.
Dominic placed Lily into her arms.
Claire buried her face against her daughter.
“My baby. My baby.”
Dominic stood over both of them.
Protective.
Furious.
Marcus's team entered.
But Victor was gone.
Adrian appeared near a side exit.
“He escaped through the loading bay.”
Dominic looked toward the darkness.
“Drive?”
Claire looked at him.
“The one I gave him was empty.”
For the first time, Dominic smiled.
“Good.”
Then Marcus shouted from across the warehouse.
“Dominic!”
They ran toward him.
A laptop sat on a folding table.
Victor had abandoned it.
The screen displayed security feeds.
Company offices.
Private residences.
Government buildings.
Claire stared.
“He's been watching everyone.”
Adrian pointed toward one feed.
Dominic's penthouse.
Live.
Another showed Valente headquarters.
Another showed a house Dominic recognized.
Victor's.
Then one feed suddenly changed.
A prerecorded video appeared.
Victor looked into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Dominic, then you chose the child over catching me.”
Dominic's face hardened.
Victor smiled.
“I knew you would.”
Claire looked at Dominic.
Victor continued.
“That is your weakness. You finally found something you are afraid to lose.”
A timer appeared beneath the video.
23:59:41.
Twenty-four hours.
Then text filled the screen.
VALENTE GLOBAL DATA RELEASE
Claire whispered, “What's that?”
Adrian's face went pale.
“Everything.”
Victor's recording continued.
“At midnight tomorrow, every Lighthouse file goes public.”
Dominic stared.
“All the bribes. All the secrets. Your father's crimes. Your executive credentials. Everything.”
The timer continued counting.
“And when it does…”
Victor smiled.
“Valente Global dies.”
The screen went black.
Claire held Lily tighter.
They had recovered her daughter.
But Victor had just turned the entire company into a bomb with twenty-four hours left on the clock.
May you like
And this time there would be no locked door to keep the danger outside.
