Chapter 16 - A Wedding With One Empty Chair

Claire chose a small wedding.

Dominic initially interpreted small as three hundred people.

Claire corrected him.

“Forty.”

Dominic stared.

“Employees?”

“Family and friends.”

“Business partners?”

“No.”

“Board members?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Forty is unreasonable.”

“Forty-five.”

“Two hundred.”

“Fifty.”

“One hundred fifty.”

“Fifty-five.”

Dominic sighed.

“Fine.”

They settled on sixty.

Adrian called it Dominic's most expensive failed negotiation.

The wedding would take place in the garden of their townhouse.

Simple flowers.

String lights.

Dinner.

No press.

No corporate sponsors.

No magazine photographs.

Claire wanted one empty chair in the front row.

For Ethan.

She worried about telling Dominic.

She shouldn't have.

“Of course,” he said.

“That doesn't bother you?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

“Claire.”

He looked at her carefully.

“Loving me doesn't require you to stop loving someone who died.”

Her eyes filled.

“You know how unusual you are?”

“Yes.”

“That was not entirely a compliment.”

“I'll accept it.”

Lily, now almost two, received the title of flower girl.

She rejected the basket.

She preferred carrying one flower at a time.

Sophia claimed this was artistic judgment.

Adrian claimed she inherited Dominic's desire to control distribution.

The night before the wedding, Claire couldn't sleep.

She went downstairs.

Dominic was in the kitchen.

“You're not supposed to see the bride.”

“We live together.”

“Tradition.”

“You came downstairs.”

“Technicality.”

Dominic poured water.

Claire sat.

“Scared?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

She smiled.

“A little.”

“Of me?”

“Of happiness.”

Dominic understood.

Claire continued.

“When you've lost something once, getting it again feels dangerous.”

He sat beside her.

“My father believed the same thing about control.”

“How?”

“He lost my mother. After that he tried to control everything else.”

Claire thought about it.

“And you copied him.”

“Yes.”

“Until a baby appeared in your hallway.”

“Yes.”

They smiled.

Lily had broken a family tradition without knowing one existed.

The wedding morning was bright.

Guests arrived.

Marcus wore a suit instead of an earpiece.

Though Claire was reasonably certain the earpiece was hidden.

Adrian stood beside Dominic.

“You nervous?”

“No.”

“Your left hand is shaking.”

Dominic looked.

It was.

“Interesting.”

Adrian laughed.

“I never thought I'd see this.”

“What?”

“You happy.”

Dominic's expression softened.

“Neither did I.”

Music began.

Lily appeared first.

She held exactly one flower.

She walked halfway down the aisle.

Then turned around.

Everyone laughed.

Sophia redirected her.

Lily reached Dominic and handed him the flower.

“For you.”

Dominic crouched.

“Thank you.”

She hugged him.

Guests melted.

Dominic did too, though he would deny it.

Then Claire appeared.

Dominic forgot every person around him.

She wore a simple ivory gown.

Her hair loose.

No dramatic train.

No jewelry except Ethan's small wedding band attached to a chain inside her dress.

Dominic knew it was there.

He loved her for carrying it.

Claire reached him.

They took hands.

The empty chair stood beside Sophia.

A small photograph of Ethan rested on it.

Claire glanced toward it once.

Then toward Dominic.

Past and future.

Not enemies.

Parts of the same life.

Their vows were simple.

Claire spoke first.

“You were the last person I expected to trust.”

Guests laughed.

Dominic almost smiled.

“You were difficult, controlling, emotionally impossible…”

“Claire.”

More laughter.

She squeezed his hand.

“And then I watched you hold my daughter like she was the most precious thing in the world before you even knew her name.”

Dominic's eyes changed.

“You taught me that safety doesn't always mean hiding.”

Claire's voice trembled.

“And you gave me permission to love tomorrow without betraying yesterday.”

Dominic swallowed.

Then his turn.

“I prepared a speech.”

Adrian whispered loudly:

“Again?”

Everyone laughed.

Dominic looked at him.

“I can still remove you.”

Claire smiled.

Dominic continued.

“I spent most of my life believing love created vulnerabilities.”

He looked at Lily.

“I was correct.”

Guests laughed softly.

“But I misunderstood the value of vulnerability.”

His gaze returned to Claire.

“You cannot lose something unless you first have something worth keeping.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“And you and Lily are worth every risk.”

They exchanged rings.

They kissed.

Lily shouted:

“Again!”

Everyone laughed.

Dominic obeyed.

That evening they danced beneath lights.

Claire rested her head against his shoulder.

“You're smiling.”

“I do that.”

“Not historically.”

“Things change.”

Across the garden, Adrian danced terribly with Sophia.

Marcus spoke with Daniel Reeves.

Lily fell asleep against a chair holding two pieces of cake.

Life looked impossible.

And real.

Later Dominic stood alone near Ethan's empty chair.

Claire saw him.

She approached quietly.

“What are you doing?”

Dominic looked at the photograph.

“Thanking him.”

Claire's breath caught.

“For what?”

Dominic looked at her.

“For not walking away.”

Claire cried.

Dominic held her.

No more words were necessary.

The wedding ended near midnight.

Guests left.

Lily slept upstairs.

Claire and Dominic stood in the quiet garden.

“Mrs. Valente?” Dominic said.

Claire made a face.

“Maybe Bennett-Valente.”

Dominic looked offended.

“We negotiated this.”

“No. You announced it.”

“Different.”

Claire laughed.

Then a car stopped outside.

Dominic frowned.

No visitors were expected.

Marcus appeared instantly.

Old habits.

A courier approached.

He carried a sealed legal envelope.

“For Dominic Valente.”

Dominic signed.

Inside was a notice.

Victor Hale had requested a meeting.

Not with Dominic.

With Claire.

She read the letter.

Dominic's expression hardened.

“You don't have to go.”

Claire looked toward Ethan's empty chair.

“No.”

She folded the notice.

“But I think I will.”

Their wedding day had ended with happiness.

Yet one unfinished conversation remained.

May you like

And Claire knew that before she could completely close the door on the past, she needed to look into Victor Hale's eyes one final time.
