Chapter 17 - Claire's Final Question

Victor looked older.

Prison had not transformed him into a different man.

It had simply removed the things that once made him look powerful.

The tailored suits.

The private offices.

The people who moved when he entered.

He sat behind glass wearing institutional clothing.

Claire sat across from him.

Dominic waited outside.

Not because Victor requested it.

Because Claire did.

This conversation belonged to her.

Victor picked up the phone.

Claire did the same.

“Mrs. Valente.”

“Claire Bennett.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“Of course.”

She stared.

“Why did you ask for me?”

“Because I owe you an answer.”

“You owe me more than that.”

“Yes.”

Claire had expected anger.

Instead she felt strangely calm.

Victor continued.

“Ethan's death was not supposed to happen.”

Claire's fingers tightened.

“Don't.”

“I know that doesn't matter.”

“You threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“You had his car altered.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity hurt.

“What was supposed to happen?”

“The steering system was designed to fail temporarily at low speed.”

“He was driving on the interstate.”

“The mechanic changed the parameters.”

“Because you paid him.”

“Yes.”

Claire swallowed.

Victor looked down.

“When I learned Ethan had died, I told myself it wasn't my responsibility.”

“You were wrong.”

“Yes.”

The word surprised her.

Victor continued.

“I spent years creating distinctions between what I ordered and what happened.”

Claire's eyes filled.

“Why?”

“To live with myself.”

“And now?”

Victor looked around the room.

“Now I have time.”

Claire said nothing.

“I cannot return your husband.”

“No.”

“I cannot give Lily her father.”

“No.”

“I cannot repair what I did.”

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

Claire waited for satisfaction.

It didn't come.

She had imagined those words.

Wanted them.

Hated him for withholding them.

Now they felt small.

Almost useless.

“Do you want me to forgive you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Victor nodded.

Claire leaned closer.

“I have one question.”

He waited.

“Did Ethan know I was pregnant?”

Victor frowned.

“I don't know.”

“You had him followed.”

“Yes.”

“We had been trying for a baby.”

Victor thought.

Then his expression changed.

“There was a pharmacy receipt.”

Claire's heart stopped.

“What?”

“He bought something the day he died.”

“What?”

Victor looked ashamed.

“A pregnancy test.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan had bought a test.

Maybe for her.

Maybe he suspected.

Maybe he planned to surprise her.

Tears filled her eyes.

Victor continued.

“There was also a note.”

“What note?”

“I never understood it.”

“Tell me.”

Victor thought.

“It said, ‘If the star arrives, tell her I knew.’”

Claire broke.

She pressed one hand against her mouth.

Little Star.

Ethan knew.

Maybe not for certain.

But enough to hope.

Victor sat silently while Claire cried.

For once, he did not try to control the moment.

Eventually Claire looked up.

“Thank you.”

Victor nodded.

She prepared to leave.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

Victor looked at her.

“Dominic changed.”

She almost smiled.

“So did you.”

“Not enough.”

“No.”

Claire stood.

Then said:

“But maybe enough to understand why.”

She left.

Dominic waited in the hallway.

One look at her face and he opened his arms.

Claire walked into them.

“He knew.”

Dominic held her.

“Ethan?”

She nodded.

“He knew Lily might be coming.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Claire cried against him.

Not only sadness.

Relief.

A missing piece.

Outside, they sat in the car for a long time.

Claire told Dominic everything.

He listened.

Then she said, “I don't forgive Victor.”

“You don't have to.”

“But I don't want to hate him anymore.”

“You don't have to do that either.”

Claire looked at him.

“How did you get so wise?”

“I married an irritating woman.”

She smiled.

“Careful.”

“Too late.”

They drove home.

Lily ran toward them.

“Dom!”

Dominic lifted her.

“My name continues to contain additional syllables.”

“Dom.”

Claire laughed.

Lily touched Claire's face.

“Mama sad?”

Claire kissed her.

“Not anymore.”

That evening, Claire opened Ethan's memory box.

She added Victor's information.

The pregnancy-test detail.

A copy of Ethan's final letter.

Then she wrote a note for Lily to read when she was older.

Your father loved you before he met you.

She paused.

Then added:

And another man loved you before he understood why.

Claire looked toward the doorway.

Dominic stood there.

“How long have you been watching?”

“Long enough.”

She held out her hand.

He crossed the room.

“Do you think she'll understand someday?” Claire asked.

“Yes.”

“How can you know?”

“Because she is smarter than Adrian.”

“That is a low standard.”

“Still.”

They laughed.

Weeks later, Harborline landed its largest contract.

Dominic returned home early.

Claire stared.

“It's four-thirty.”

“Yes.”

“On a Tuesday.”

“Yes.”

“Are you dying?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

Dominic looked at Lily.

“Daycare has family afternoon.”

Claire smiled.

“You remembered.”

“I have calendars.”

“You used to miss your own birthday.”

“My birthday didn't involve finger painting.”

Lily appeared wearing a paper crown.

Dominic crouched.

She placed another crown on his head.

Pink.

Glitter.

Claire took a photograph.

Dominic looked horrified.

“Delete that.”

“Never.”

“Claire.”

“Christmas card.”

“No.”

“Company website?”

“Absolutely not.”

Lily laughed.

Dominic surrendered.

Later that night, an email arrived from Adrian.

Subject:

Don't panic.

Dominic immediately panicked.

The message contained one photograph.

Adrian standing beside an airport departure board.

Below it:

Going to Italy for three months. Need to figure out who I am when I'm not fighting you or Dad. Don't send security.

Dominic stared.

Claire read over his shoulder.

“What will you do?”

“Send security.”

“Dominic.”

“He said don't.”

“Exactly.”

Dominic sighed.

He called Adrian.

Surprisingly, Adrian answered.

“Before you start—”

“Come home safely.”

Silence.

Adrian sounded caught off guard.

“That it?”

“Yes.”

“No lecture?”

“No.”

“No tracking device?”

Dominic looked at Claire.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“You really have changed.”

“So everyone keeps saying.”

“Love you, Dom.”

Dominic froze.

Adrian waited.

Claire watched.

Finally Dominic said:

“Love you too.”

Adrian disconnected.

Claire smiled.

Dominic glared.

“Don't.”

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were going to.”

“Maybe.”

Dominic looked toward Lily sleeping nearby.

The family that had once been held together by secrets was learning something entirely different.

How to say things before it was too late.

And soon, one final surprise would arrive—one that no hidden file, corporate investigation, or security system could predict.
