Chapter 18 - The Second Little Star

One year later, Harborline Group moved into a larger office.

Dominic refused marble floors.

Employees celebrated this as evidence of personal growth.

Adrian returned from Italy with longer hair, better Italian, and an alarming interest in cooking.

Sophia approved only the cooking.

Marcus married a federal investigator he met during the Victor case.

Dominic gave the worst best-man speech anyone had ever heard.

Claire's company expanded to twelve employees.

Little Star Analytics became known for protecting whistleblowers before their lives could be destroyed by the information they discovered.

And Lily turned three.

Her birthday party contained balloons, cake, twenty children, and one terrified corporate executive.

Dominic stood beside Claire watching children run through their garden.

“This is chaos.”

“Yes.”

“Why are there so many?”

“Because Lily has friends.”

“She should reduce her network.”

“She is three.”

“Networking becomes dangerous when unmanaged.”

Claire kissed his cheek.

“You're doing great.”

A child ran past carrying Dominic's shoe.

Dominic stared.

“Why does he have that?”

Claire laughed.

“Growth.”

That evening, after the last guest left, Claire sat on the bed.

She held something behind her back.

Dominic entered.

“Where is Lily?”

“Asleep.”

“Adrian?”

“Guest room.”

“Sophia?”

“Home.”

Dominic stopped.

“You're being strange.”

Claire smiled.

“Sit.”

He became suspicious.

“I dislike instructions.”

“I know.”

He sat.

Claire handed him a small box.

Dominic looked at it.

Then at her.

“Open it.”

Inside was a tiny pair of baby socks.

Dominic stared.

Completely blank.

Claire waited.

Nothing.

“Dominic?”

He looked up.

“You're pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You're sure?”

“Very.”

Dominic looked at the socks again.

Claire's smile faded slightly.

“You okay?”

He stood.

Walked to the window.

Claire's heart sank.

“Dominic?”

He turned.

His eyes were wet.

Claire had seen him angry.

Cold.

Frightened.

Happy.

She had almost never seen him cry.

“You're crying.”

“No.”

“You absolutely are.”

Dominic wiped his face.

“Temporary eye irritation.”

Claire laughed and cried simultaneously.

He crossed the room and knelt in front of her.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Doctor?”

“Already went.”

“You went without me?”

“I needed confirmation.”

“When is the next appointment?”

“Thursday.”

“I'll clear the day.”

“You don't have to clear the entire day.”

“I do.”

Claire touched his face.

“You're happy?”

Dominic laughed softly.

The sound surprised both of them.

“Yes.”

He placed a hand carefully against her stomach.

Nothing visible yet.

But something existed.

A future.

The next morning they told Lily.

“You're going to be a big sister.”

Lily frowned.

“No.”

Claire blinked.

“No?”

“No baby.”

Dominic looked at Claire.

“Reasonable.”

She glared.

“Don't support this.”

Lily folded her arms exactly like Dominic.

Claire stared.

“This is your fault.”

Dominic seemed proud.

They gradually convinced Lily.

Mostly through promises that the baby would eventually play with her.

She insisted the baby be named Sparkle.

Dominic vetoed it.

Claire kept it as a temporary nickname.

Pregnancy changed the household.

Dominic became absurdly protective.

“Don't carry that.”

“It is a grocery bag.”

“Adrian.”

Adrian took it.

“Traitor,” Claire muttered.

“I'm afraid of him.”

“You're his brother.”

“Exactly.”

At every appointment Dominic sat beside Claire.

During the first ultrasound, he held her hand.

The heartbeat filled the small room.

Dominic stopped breathing.

Claire looked at him.

There it was again.

The vulnerable man beneath every layer of control.

“That's our baby,” she whispered.

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

Later, he visited Ethan's grave alone.

Claire didn't know until afterward.

Dominic stood before the stone.

He felt foolish speaking aloud.

But did anyway.

“I don't know if you can hear anything.”

Wind moved through the trees.

“Your daughter is incredible.”

He smiled.

“She calls me Dom. I blame Adrian.”

He became quiet.

“I wanted you to know I will never let her forget you.”

Dominic placed flowers near the stone.

“And Claire is happy.”

His voice softened.

“I hope that's okay.”

Of course there was no answer.

Dominic didn't need one.

He returned home feeling lighter.

Months passed.

The baby was a boy.

Lily objected.

She had requested a sister.

Then decided brothers were acceptable if she was permitted to name him.

She proposed Sparkle again.

Denied.

Eventually Claire and Dominic chose:

Ethan Daniel Valente.

Dominic suggested Ethan.

Claire cried for twenty minutes.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Dominic…”

“He should carry something from both men who helped us find this life.”

Daniel for Dominic's father.

Ethan for Lily's father.

Past carried forward without being hidden.

When Claire went into labor, Dominic abandoned a meeting so quickly his executives thought the building was on fire.

At the hospital he attempted to control everything.

Nurses ignored him.

Claire found this hilarious between contractions.

“You can't negotiate childbirth.”

“I have noticed.”

“Stop looking at the monitor.”

“I need information.”

“Dominic.”

He looked at her.

“Hold my hand.”

He did.

Hours later, a baby cried.

Dominic froze.

The doctor placed the child against Claire.

She sobbed.

Dominic stood beside them unable to speak.

“Meet your son,” Claire whispered.

Dominic touched the baby's tiny hand.

The fingers closed around his.

Exactly as Lily's had years earlier.

Dominic laughed through tears.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Claire looked toward him.

Then whispered:

“Pick him up.”

For one brief second Dominic remembered the hallway.

A baby beneath a chandelier.

Raised arms.

His own terrified retreat.

He lifted his son confidently.

No hesitation.

The baby settled against his chest.

Dominic kissed his forehead.

Claire watched.

“You know what you're doing now.”

Dominic smiled.

“Apparently.”

The door opened.

Lily entered with Sophia.

She stared at the baby.

“Small.”

Claire laughed.

“Yes.”

Lily climbed beside her.

“Can I hold him?”

“With help.”

Dominic sat.

Lily carefully touched Ethan's cheek.

The baby opened his eyes.

Lily smiled.

“Hi.”

Then she whispered:

“I'm your sister.”

Dominic looked at Claire.

Claire looked at him.

The family that began with one unexpected child had grown.

But one chapter remained.

Because happiness wasn't only reaching a beautiful moment.

It was choosing what to do with the life that came afterward.

May you like

And Dominic was about to make one final decision about the legacy his children would inherit.
