Chapter 4 - The Secret Their Father Left Behind

Dominic did not go alone.

Technically.

Marcus followed three cars behind.

Claire objected to the entire plan.

“You received an anonymous message telling you to meet your estranged brother alone after someone threatened my baby, and your response is to go?”

Dominic adjusted his cuff.

“Yes.”

“That wasn't actually a question.”

“I know.”

Claire stood in his penthouse living room holding Lily.

The board meeting had ended in chaos.

Victor had been temporarily placed on administrative leave pending an independent investigation.

He left without protest.

That worried Dominic more than anger would have.

Victor had expected something.

Perhaps everything.

“You don't know whether Adrian sent the message,” Claire said.

“The photograph was taken minutes ago.”

“Someone else could have his phone.”

“Which is why Marcus is following me.”

“Three cars behind isn't exactly protection.”

“It is when Marcus is driving.”

Claire looked toward the security chief.

Marcus gave her a small nod.

“She has a point.”

Dominic stared at him.

“You're fired.”

“I hear that every Thursday.”

“It is Friday.”

“Then I'm overdue.”

Claire nearly smiled.

Dominic's expression softened for half a second.

Then he looked at Lily.

She was chewing on the corner of a stuffed rabbit one of his assistants had purchased that morning.

The penthouse now contained diapers, formula, toys, and a portable crib.

Dominic had not personally authorized any of them.

He also had not ordered anyone to remove them.

“Stay here,” he told Claire.

“Again with the orders.”

“Please.”

That stopped her.

Dominic didn't use the word often.

Claire studied his face.

“Come back.”

Simple.

Two words.

They landed harder than he expected.

Dominic nodded.

The address Adrian sent led to an old church in Queens.

Dominic parked across the street.

The neighborhood was quiet.

Children rode bicycles on the sidewalk.

An elderly man watered flowers outside a brick apartment building.

Nothing about the place looked threatening.

Which meant nothing.

Dominic entered through a side door.

Sophia was waiting.

She stood near the altar wearing the same clothes from the security footage.

Dominic stopped.

Relief hit him with unexpected force.

“Sophia.”

She crossed the room and hugged him.

Dominic stiffened.

Then hugged her back.

“You could have called.”

“I couldn't.”

“Someone threatened you?”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

A voice came from behind the pews.

“She was protecting me.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Four years disappeared in one second.

Dominic saw the boy who used to follow him around their father's estate.

The teenager who once crashed Dominic's car and blamed a gardener.

The young man who stood in their father's office screaming that Dominic had stolen his inheritance.

And the stranger who walked away afterward.

Adrian looked older now.

Thirty.

Tired.

“Hello, Dom.”

Dominic's face hardened.

“Don't call me that.”

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

“Still charming.”

“What does Victor want?”

Adrian's smile vanished.

“You went straight there.”

“I don't have patience for reunions.”

“You never did.”

Sophia stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both brothers became silent.

She had apparently spent enough years around Valente men to be unimpressed by either.

“Sit.”

Dominic remained standing.

Adrian sat.

Sophia glared.

Dominic sat.

“Your father left something behind,” Sophia began.

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Our father left a company, three properties, investments, and approximately forty pages of instructions.”

“Not in the will.”

Adrian looked at Dominic.

“He left evidence.”

“Of what?”

Adrian leaned forward.

“That Valente Global almost collapsed fifteen years ago.”

Dominic frowned.

“I know.”

Their father had told him about the financial crisis.

One failed shipping expansion nearly destroyed the company.

“He saved it.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No. Victor did.”

Dominic became still.

Adrian continued.

“Victor moved money through shell companies to keep creditors from seizing operating assets.”

“That would have been illegal.”

“It was.”

Dominic looked at Sophia.

She didn't deny it.

Adrian continued.

“Dad planned to repay everything and disclose the structure once the company stabilized.”

“He didn't.”

“He died first.”

Dominic's jaw tightened.

Their father died suddenly from a heart attack.

At least that was what Dominic had always believed.

“Victor kept the structure alive,” Adrian said.

“For what purpose?”

“Leverage.”

Dominic understood immediately.

“If the original transactions become public, Valente Global could face investigations.”

“And lawsuits.”

“And regulatory penalties.”

Adrian nodded.

“Dad knew Victor was becoming dangerous. He created a complete record of every transaction and stored it separately.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Dominic laughed once.

Cold.

“You dragged Sophia through Manhattan because you don't know?”

Adrian stood.

“I know where part of it is.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Dad divided the evidence.”

“Why?”

“So no single person could use it against the company.”

Sophia reached into her handbag.

She produced an old brass key.

Dominic recognized it.

It belonged to their father's private desk.

“I found this four years ago,” Adrian said.

“After he died?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“You wouldn't have listened.”

“You didn't try.”

“I did.”

Dominic stood.

“You came into my office screaming that Dad had trusted the wrong son.”

“Because I had just found proof he'd been hiding criminal transactions!”

“You never said that.”

“You told security to remove me before I could!”

Silence.

Dominic remembered.

He remembered Adrian arriving drunk.

Angry.

Carrying papers.

Dominic had been grieving, exhausted, and trying to prevent the company from collapsing during succession.

He had assumed Adrian wanted money.

Maybe he had been wrong.

Sophia spoke gently.

“Your father made mistakes.”

Dominic looked at her.

“He also tried to correct them.”

Adrian took out a folded note.

“He left this inside the desk.”

Dominic unfolded it.

His father's handwriting.

D — If something happens before I finish this, trust your brother before you trust the company. Blood can disappoint you. Money will betray you.

Dominic read it twice.

The room became very quiet.

His father had written to him.

D.

Not Dominic.

The same name Adrian used.

Dom.

A name from before everything hardened.

Dominic looked up.

“Why wait four years?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Because I was angry.”

“At me?”

“At everybody.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“I wanted the company to collapse.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Adrian continued.

“For about six months, I wanted you to lose everything.”

Dominic's face became cold.

“And then?”

“I grew up.”

Dominic said nothing.

“I started trying to trace Victor's accounts. Quietly. Every time I got close, the structure changed.”

“The recent transfers?”

“Not mine.”

“Claire found them.”

Adrian nodded.

“I know.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“Victor mentioned her yesterday.”

“Why would Victor mention Claire to you?”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“Because he thinks I'm helping him.”

Dominic stared.

Adrian continued quickly.

“I spent two years convincing Victor I still hated you enough to cooperate.”

Dominic's expression became dangerous.

“You met him yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“He thinks you're helping frame me.”

“Yes.”

“And Sophia?”

“She contacted me after Claire gave her evidence. We realized Victor was moving sooner than expected.”

“So you removed Sophia from the building without telling me?”

“If Victor's people were monitoring communications, yes.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“You could have trusted me.”

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“Funny coming from you.”

Before Dominic could respond, Sophia stepped between them again.

“I did not spend fifteen years cleaning up after both of you to watch you behave like children now.”

Adrian looked away.

Dominic said nothing.

Sophia pointed toward the old brass key.

“The key opens a deposit box.”

“Where?”

“A private bank.”

Adrian handed Dominic a card.

“Dad rented it under another name.”

“What is inside?”

“Hopefully the second part of the evidence.”

“Second?”

Adrian looked at Sophia.

“The first part is gone.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Gone?”

“Victor found it.”

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

Dominic understood.

That was why the money had suddenly become visible.

Victor wasn't merely stealing.

He was preparing to expose the old fraud and blame Dominic for both.

“Why threaten Claire?”

Adrian's expression darkened.

“Because she found the new transfers before Victor was ready.”

Dominic thought of Lily.

The message.

Send Claire Bennett home if you want the child to remain safe.

Something ugly moved through him.

Adrian noticed.

“He won't touch them.”

“You sound confident.”

“Victor wants leverage, not violence.”

“You don't know what desperate people do.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“But apparently you care what happens to them.”

Dominic's expression closed.

“They're under my protection.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Right.”

“Don't.”

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were about to.”

Sophia sighed.

For the first time in twenty-four hours, Dominic almost felt normal.

Then Sophia's phone buzzed.

She checked it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She handed it to Adrian.

He swore under his breath.

Dominic took the phone.

A news alert.

VALENTE GLOBAL CEO LINKED TO SECRET SWISS ACCOUNT

Below it was Dominic's photograph.

Victor had leaked the story.

Adrian stood.

“He's accelerating.”

Dominic's phone began ringing.

Board members.

Lawyers.

Reporters.

Investors.

He ignored all of them.

Then one message appeared.

From Claire.

Someone is downstairs asking for me.

Dominic called immediately.

Claire answered.

“Who?”

“I don't know. Security won't let him upstairs.”

“Stay away from the elevator.”

“I am.”

“Put Marcus's deputy on.”

“Dominic…”

Something in her voice changed.

“What?”

“The man says he knows my husband.”

Dominic went still.

Claire continued.

“He says my husband's death wasn't an accident.”

Dominic looked at Adrian.

Because suddenly the secret their father had left behind was no longer only connected to Valente Global.

It was connected to Claire's past.

May you like

And whoever stood downstairs had just opened a door none of them had known existed.
