Chapter 2 - Thirty Guests and One Lie

“Mom.”

Evan’s voice had lost its confidence.

Marian placed the blue folder on the dining table.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody even seemed to breathe.

“Everyone should leave,” Evan said.

Marian looked at him.

“No.”

“Mom, this is a family matter.”

Marian’s eyes traveled around the table.

“You made my daughter-in-law serve thirty people on a broken leg. You humiliated her in front of those same people. Apparently you wanted an audience.”

Her hand settled on the folder.

“So now you have one.”

Paige stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Sit down, Paige.”

Paige stared at her mother.

Marian had not raised her voice.

She did not need to.

Paige sat.

Claire remained near the kitchen doorway, unsure whether she was witnessing a rescue or the beginning of another disaster.

Evan stepped forward.

“What is that?”

Marian almost smiled.

“You know.”

“No, I don’t.”

That was the first lie.

Claire recognized the small twitch near Evan’s left eye.

He always did that when he lied under pressure.

Marian opened the folder.

Inside were documents separated by cream-colored tabs.

Claire saw bank statements.

Property records.

Photographs.

And a sealed envelope.

Marian removed the first document.

“This house,” she said, “belongs entirely to me.”

Evan laughed nervously.

“Obviously.”

“Then perhaps you can explain why you applied for a loan against it.”

The laughter was gone now.

Evan’s face hardened.

“I didn’t.”

Marian placed another page beside the first.

“My signature.”

She tapped it.

“Except I never signed this.”

Claire felt cold.

Paige whispered, “Evan?”

“It’s a misunderstanding.”

Marian continued.

“There are three attempted transfers. Two insurance documents. And a proposed sale agreement.”

Evan looked toward Claire.

That glance told her everything.

He was searching for someone to blame.

His eyes stopped on her.

“What did you tell her?”

Claire almost laughed.

“I didn’t know any of this.”

“Don’t lie.”

Marian slammed her cane against the floor.

“Do not speak to her that way again.”

Evan went silent.

Marian looked toward Claire.

“Sit.”

“I’m okay.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

A guest pulled out a chair.

Claire lowered herself carefully.

The relief in her leg was immediate, but embarrassment burned through her.

Marian crouched as far as her age allowed and studied the cast.

“How long?”

“Two weeks.”

“And nobody told me?”

Claire looked at Evan.

Marian followed her gaze.

Her expression became colder.

“How did it happen?”

“I fell.”

Evan relaxed slightly.

Claire saw it.

Marian saw it too.

“Did you?”

Claire looked down.

“I lost my balance during an argument.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Marian’s voice softened.

“Did Evan touch you?”

Claire could feel every person watching.

“He grabbed my arm.”

Evan exploded.

“That is not what happened!”

Several guests flinched.

Claire didn’t.

Not anymore.

“You pulled away!” Evan said. “You fell because you were hysterical.”

Claire looked at him.

“I told you I couldn’t feel my foot.”

“You were screaming!”

“My leg was broken.”

“You always exaggerate everything.”

There it was.

The mask was gone.

The charming husband disappeared in front of everyone.

Claire saw realization spreading around the room.

Marian closed the folder.

“Evan, pack a bag.”

He stared at her.

“You can’t be serious.”

“I have never been more serious.”

“This is my home.”

“No. It is the house where I allowed you to live.”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

Then he smiled.

It was not a pleasant smile.

“Careful, Mom.”

Marian studied him.

“With what?”

“You’re forgetting things lately.”

Claire felt her stomach twist.

Evan continued.

“You’ve had a stroke. Medication. Memory problems.”

Marian’s fingers tightened around her cane.

Evan stepped closer.

“Maybe you signed those documents and forgot.”

Claire understood immediately.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He was building a case against his mother’s competence.

Marian understood too.

For the first time, pain crossed her face.

Then Claire spoke.

“She didn’t forget.”

Evan turned.

Claire reached beneath her apron.

She removed her phone.

May you like

“I have something too.”

And suddenly the blue folder was no longer the only secret in the room.
