Chapter 17 - The House Goes Silent

“I’m selling it,” Marian announced.
Claire nearly dropped her coffee.
“What?”
“The house.”
“You love this house.”
“No. I loved the family I imagined would fill it.”
Marian looked around the enormous dining room.
“It’s too large. Too many stairs. Too many ghosts.”
Claire understood.
Marian planned to buy a smaller home nearby.
Then she handed Claire an envelope.
Claire refused to open it.
“What did you do?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a check.
Claire pushed it back.
“No.”
“You haven’t even looked at the amount.”
“I don’t care.”
“It’s compensation.”
“For what?”
“Four years of caregiving.”
“I did that because I loved you.”
“And love does not mean your labor had no value.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Marian—”
“You lost years of income.”
“I’m rebuilding.”
“Yes. And this will help.”
Claire shook her head.
Marian sighed.
“You really are impossible.”
“So are you.”
They compromised.
Claire accepted enough to cover medical costs, therapy, and the expenses she had personally absorbed while caring for Marian.
The rest remained Marian’s.
Paige helped prepare the house for sale.
One afternoon, the three women entered the dining room.
The birthday table was gone.
Sunlight stretched across the floor.
Claire stood where she had once poured wine on a broken leg.
Paige came beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire knew exactly what she meant.
“I know.”
“No. I need to say it properly. I saw things and chose not to see them.”
Claire looked at her.
“Then see them next time.”
Paige nodded.
They hugged.
Marian watched from the doorway.
Three women who had once been separated by one man’s lies now stood together because the truth had finally been shared.
The movers arrived Monday.
By Friday, the mansion was nearly empty.
Claire walked through the kitchen one last time.
She removed the small camera beneath the cabinet.
Held it in her palm.
Then dropped it into a box.
She no longer needed a machine to prove what happened in her own life.
She believed herself.
At the front door, Marian called her name.
Claire turned.
“You coming?”
May you like
Claire looked back once.
Then stepped outside.
