Chapter 12 - The Missing Account

The account belonged to Paige.

She swore she knew nothing about it.

Investigators eventually confirmed she was telling the truth.

Evan had used her identity too.

“He wanted both of us available to blame,” Claire said.

Paige stared at the floor.

“He really didn’t trust anyone.”

Marian corrected her.

“He trusted all of us to remain obedient.”

The distinction mattered.

The case widened.

Evan’s confidence shrank.

His attorney began discussing settlement.

Claire refused any agreement that required her to withdraw evidence related to financial wrongdoing.

“This isn’t revenge,” she told Rachel.

“I know.”

“I just don’t want him doing this to someone else.”

Marian overheard.

“He won’t.”

But Claire knew Marian could not guarantee that.

Nobody could.

The only thing they could do was stop hiding.

Meanwhile, Claire’s leg strengthened.

One afternoon she crossed the entire kitchen without her cane.

Marian watched from the doorway.

Neither woman spoke until Claire reached the other side.

Then Marian applauded once.

Claire laughed.

“Don’t make it dramatic.”

“After what you put up with, I’m allowed one clap.”

Claire looked around the kitchen.

This was where Evan had ordered her to work.

Where she had secretly recorded him.

Where she had believed she had no power.

Now sunlight filled the room.

She realized the room itself had never been the prison.

Fear had been.

That night, another discovery arrived.

One of Bell’s emails referred to a document called M.V. Amendment Final.

Rachel frowned.

“We don’t have this.”

Marian’s face changed.

“I know what it is.”

“What?”

“My old will.”

Claire stared.

Marian continued.

“Before I changed the trust, Evan was the primary beneficiary.”

Rachel understood first.

“If he believed that will was still valid…”

“He had a financial incentive for me not to recover.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire remembered the months after Marian’s stroke.

Evan discouraging therapy.

Evan complaining about expensive specialists.

Evan saying his mother should “accept reality.”

Claire felt sick.

May you like

Marian’s voice remained controlled.

“Find out how far he went.”
