Chapter 16 - Evan’s Last Lie

The document was supposedly a letter from Marian.
It claimed she had approved the transfers.
It carried her signature.
It was dated three years earlier.
Evan’s attorney called it exculpatory.
Rachel called it suspicious.
Marian looked at it and laughed.
“That’s not my stationery.”
Nobody understood.
Marian pointed to the crest at the top.
“The printer who made that stationery closed five years ago. But this design?”
She touched the page.
“I changed it six years ago.”
The document was dated three years earlier but used an older template.
That alone did not prove forgery.
Then forensic examination found something stronger.
The file used to print the letter had been created recently.
Very recently.
After the investigation began.
Evan had apparently tried to manufacture evidence while already under scrutiny.
His last lie became one of the most damaging.
Bell’s cooperation filled the remaining gaps.
Investigators traced the transfers.
Claire and Paige were cleared of involvement.
Evan faced consequences far beyond the divorce.
Claire refused to celebrate.
Paige asked why.
“Because this is still sad.”
“He tried to destroy you.”
“I know.”
“Then why feel sorry for him?”
Claire looked toward Marian.
“Because winning doesn’t make what happened good.”
Marian heard her.
Later she said quietly, “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For remembering he’s my son.”
Claire hugged her.
Marian cried against Claire’s shoulder.
A mother could condemn what her child had done and still grieve the person he might have been.
Those truths could exist together.
Weeks later, Evan agreed to divorce terms.
He did not apologize.
Claire no longer needed him to.
When she signed the final papers, her hand did not shake.
Rachel looked at her.
“How does it feel?”
Claire considered the question.
“Quiet.”
“Good quiet?”
Claire smiled.
“The best kind.”
But one thing remained.
The house.
May you like
Marian had made a decision about it.
And she knew Claire was not going to like it.
