Chapter 7 - A Marriage Built on Paper

The safe-deposit box contained letters, account ledgers, and one flash drive.
Marian had kept everything.
She explained why on the drive home.
“After the stroke, there were days I couldn’t remember breakfast. But there were other days when I understood perfectly.”
“So you documented things.”
“I was afraid Evan would convince people that my good days never existed.”
Claire looked out the window.
That fear felt familiar.
The flash drive contained scanned financial records.
Rachel spent two days reviewing them.
When she finally called Claire into the study, her expression was grim.
“Evan’s company received money from accounts connected to Marian.”
“How much?”
Rachel gave her the number.
Claire sat down.
It was more money than she had earned in her entire legal career.
“Can we prove Evan controlled the company?”
“Not yet.”
“Thomas Bell?”
“Possibly.”
Then Rachel turned the laptop.
“But I found something else.”
It was an email.
From Evan.
To a private investigator.
Subject: C.V.
Claire’s initials.
Her mouth went dry.
The attached report documented her movements.
Coffee meetings.
Doctor appointments.
Visits to Rachel’s office.
Photographs.
Dates.
Times.
“He was following me.”
“For six months.”
Claire remembered every moment she had thought she was paranoid.
The gray car.
The man across from the pharmacy.
The footsteps outside Rachel’s building.
Evan had trained her not to trust herself.
Now evidence was proving that her instincts had been right.
Marian entered.
Claire showed her.
The older woman’s expression crumbled.
“I raised him.”
Claire reached for her hand.
“You didn’t choose this.”
Marian shook her head.
“I excused too much.”
That evening, Claire stood in the kitchen alone.
The birthday decorations were gone.
The dishes were clean.
The house was quiet.
For years, quiet had meant Evan was angry.
Now quiet meant he was absent.
Claire discovered she liked it.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
“Claire Vale?”
“Yes.”
“This is Detective Harris.”
Claire straightened.
“I need to speak with you regarding a complaint filed by your husband.”
Claire’s heart dropped.
“What complaint?”
“Mr. Vale alleges financial fraud.”
Of course he did.
He had prepared the paperwork.
He had forged her name.
And now he was using it.
Claire looked at the kitchen camera.
For the first time, she understood the scale of Evan’s plan.

He had never intended merely to control her.
He had prepared to sacrifice her.
