Chapter 9 - Evan Strikes Back

Evan changed tactics.
He stopped calling.
Stopped texting.
Stopped appearing at the house.
Then he began telling his story publicly.
Friends called Claire.
Relatives messaged Marian.
According to Evan, Claire had manipulated a vulnerable elderly woman after deliberately destroying her marriage.
Claire refused to respond online.
Rachel insisted.
“Evidence belongs in the proper place.”
Claire agreed.
But silence had a price.
People believed whatever version reached them first.
One afternoon, Claire found Paige crying in the guest room.
“What happened?”
Paige handed over her phone.
Evan had accused Paige of conspiring with Claire.
“He said I’m dead to him.”
Claire sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Paige laughed through tears.
“You should hate me.”
“I don’t.”
“I laughed at you that night.”
Claire remembered.
Careful, Claire. Don’t trip again.
“Yes.”
Paige looked ashamed.
“I thought you were dramatic because that’s what Evan always said.”
Claire said nothing.
Paige wiped her eyes.
“He did it to all of us, didn’t he?”
“Yes.”
That evening Paige made a decision.
She gave Rachel access to years of messages between herself and Evan.
Buried among family gossip were discussions of Marian’s finances.
One message changed everything.
Evan had written:
Once Mom’s declared incompetent, I can fix the rest.
Paige had replied:
Fix what?
Evan:
Everything Dad should’ve left me in the first place.
Marian read it silently.
Her husband had died twelve years earlier.
His will had left most assets to Marian.
Evan had never forgiven him.
Marian finally understood that her son’s resentment had not begun with Claire.
It had begun long before.
The blue folder had merely exposed it.
Two days later, Thomas Bell disappeared.
His office was empty.
His phone disconnected.
And investigators discovered that a large transfer had been initiated hours before he vanished.

Someone was running.
The only question was whether Evan would follow.
