Chapter 10 - What Elena Really Stole
The ledger revealed the twist none of them expected.
Elena had taken money.
But not two million dollars.
She had withdrawn forty thousand.
Why?
To escape with Sofia.
Lucille had hidden her own embezzlement inside Elena's withdrawal, transforming a desperate mother's escape fund into evidence of a massive theft.
Sofia stared at the records.
“My mother died believing everyone thought she was a criminal.”
Rafael shook his head.
“Not everyone.”
He found a letter from his grandfather.
It apologized.
He had discovered Lucille's deception too late.
He helped Elena disappear but lacked the courage to expose the truth publicly.
The letter ended:
One day someone in this family must choose truth over the Montaro name.

Rafael folded it.
He knew exactly what he had to do.
