Chapter 5 - The Missing Two Million

Rafael refused to believe an accusation simply because it was dramatic.

He wanted evidence.

Sofia had brought it.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Copies of ledgers.

A handwritten note from Elena.

None alone proved everything.

Together they raised questions Rafael couldn't ignore.

The missing money had moved through three shell companies before reaching an account controlled by someone using Lucille's maiden name.

“Why didn't Elena expose her?” Rafael asked.

“She tried.”

Sofia showed him another letter.

Their grandfather had discovered the truth.

But the Montaro family had been negotiating a merger that would rescue several businesses from bankruptcy. A public financial scandal involving Lucille could have destroyed everything.

So Elena became the sacrifice.

“She agreed?”

“No. She was threatened.”

“With what?”

“With losing me.”

Rafael stared at Sofia.

“Elena had you in secret?”

“My father died before I was born. Mom returned to the Montaro estate because she had nowhere else to go.”

“Why doesn't anyone remember you?”

“I lived mostly with a nanny in another house.”

Sofia's voice tightened.

“When the money disappeared, Lucille told everyone my mother had stolen it and run. Grandfather helped Elena leave quietly, but he made her promise never to return.”

“And then?”

“She became sick.”

Rafael looked toward Elena's grave.

“She died less than a year later.”

“Cancer.”

“Who raised you?”

“My mother's friend.”

“Why come back now?”

Sofia looked at him.

“Because your grandfather left me something.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

“And you waited twenty-nine years?”

“I didn't receive it until six months ago.”

An attorney had found an old sealed trust file after the death of a former Montaro legal adviser.

Inside was a letter addressed to Sofia.

It contained one instruction:

If Lucille still controls the Montaro family, find Rafael.

“Why me?”

“Your grandfather believed your father would never challenge her.”

Rafael couldn't deny that.

Mateo had spent his life avoiding conflict.

“Why the blackberry cobbler?”

Sofia looked ashamed.

“My mother wrote that Lucille destroyed her last cobbler during their final argument. I thought if Lucille saw it again, she'd understand someone knew.”

“You could have put it on her doorstep.”

“I needed her reaction witnessed.”

“So you used Emmett.”

Sofia's silence was answer enough.

Rafael stood.

“We're done.”

“Rafael—”

“My son cried himself to sleep because adults decided their secrets mattered more than his feelings.”

“I am sorry.”

“Sorry doesn't undo it.”

He walked away.

His phone rang before he reached the car.

Celina.

“Rafael, where are you?”

“Busy.”

“Lucille knows you've met Sofia.”

Rafael stopped.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“What does she want?”

“She called a family meeting.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“I'm not coming.”

“You need to.”

“Why?”

Celina whispered:

“Because she's telling everyone you're trying to take control of the family fortune.”

Rafael almost laughed.

Then Celina added:

“And she's using what happened with Emmett as proof that you're unstable.”
