Chapter 9 - Rafael's Sister

Mateo confessed before sunrise.

He had loved Elena when they were young.

They weren't biologically related, but the family considered the relationship scandalous.

Sofia was born secretly.

Mateo wanted to leave.

Lucille stopped him.

She convinced him that public knowledge would destroy both families and eventually persuaded him that Elena had stolen the money.

“I believed her,” Mateo said.

“For twenty-nine years?”

“I wanted to.”

That answer disgusted Rafael.

Because believing Lucille had been easier than accepting responsibility.

Sofia arrived after Rafael called.

Mateo saw her.

His knees nearly gave way.

“You look like your mother.”

Sofia's eyes remained cold.

“You don't get to say that.”

Mateo cried.

Sofia didn't comfort him.

Rafael understood.

Some reunions were not beautiful.

Some came decades too late.

But truth had finally entered the room.

And this time, Lucille couldn't kick it away.
