Chapter 14 - Emmett's Question

Later, Emmett asked Rafael:
“Is Grandma bad?”
Rafael considered the question carefully.
“Grandma did something bad.”
“Is she sorry?”
“I don't know.”
“Can she say sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Why doesn't she?”
Rafael had no simple answer.
Children sometimes asked questions adults spent lifetimes avoiding.
“Maybe because saying sorry means admitting you hurt someone.”
Emmett thought.
Then he said:
“When I hurt Noah at school, I said sorry.”
Rafael smiled sadly.
“That was brave.”
Emmett leaned against him.
“Can Grandma be brave?”

Rafael looked toward Lucille across the room.
“I hope so.”
