Chapter 13 - My Father’s Last Letter

Dad’s final letter began:

If you are reading this together, then perhaps something broke badly enough that honesty finally entered the room.

Mom laughed through tears.

“That sounds like him.”

We read slowly.

Dad wrote that he loved Mom.

That he understood her fear.

That he had seen her childhood shape the way she clung to family.

Her own mother had abandoned her at twelve.

Suddenly, another piece fell into place.

Mom’s obsession with loyalty.

Her terror when I moved away.

Her belief that independence meant rejection.

Dad wrote:

Diane, our daughter leaving home is not her leaving you. Emily, your mother’s fear is not yours to cure. Love each other without turning fear into debt.

Mom covered her face.

I held her hand.

For the first time, I saw Mother’s Day differently.

Not excused.

Never excused.

But understood.

Cruelty often has history.

Understanding history does not require accepting cruelty.

That was the balance I had never known before.

Dad ended with:

If I did my job correctly, neither of you needs to win. You only need to stop being afraid of losing each other.

Mom whispered, “I was so afraid.”

“I know.”

“I made you pay for it.”

“Yes.”

She squeezed my hand.

“I’m sorry.”

This time, I said the words she had been waiting months to hear.

“I forgive you.”

But forgiveness didn’t return us to who we were.

May you like

It allowed us to build something new.
