Chapter 15 - Mom Lost the House—But Not for the Reason Everyone Thought

People online kept saying Mom “lost” her house.

She didn’t.

She sold it.

That difference mattered.

She invited me to the empty house before closing.

The rooms echoed.

My childhood bedroom looked smaller than I remembered.

Mom stood in the kitchen.

“I thought selling this meant losing your father.”

I understood.

“So you let me keep it for you.”

She nodded.

“I think so.”

We walked into Dad’s study.

The desk was gone.

Only faded rectangles remained where bookshelves had stood.

Mom handed me a small brass key.

“What’s this?”

“Your father’s old desk drawer.”

“The desk isn’t here.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“It’s in my garage.”

We both laughed.

Then she became serious.

“Take it.”

“Why?”

“Because some things should go to the person they were meant for.”

That sentence healed something property documents never could.

The house sold.

Mom moved.

The world did not end.

Sometimes we mistake letting go of a building for losing the people who lived there.
