Chapter 17 - The Apology I Refused to Accept Too Easily

Months earlier, Mom had apologized.
But real apology is not a sentence.
It is behavior repeated after the emotional moment passes.
So I watched.
When I said no, did she punish me?
No.
When I missed dinner because of work, did she guilt me?
No.
When I traveled with Daniel instead of spending Thanksgiving weekend at her house?
She said, “Have fun.”
When she needed a new refrigerator?
She saved.
Compared models.
Bought one herself.
Then proudly sent me a photo.
Look what your financially independent mother purchased.
I laughed so hard Daniel came downstairs to check on me.
That was when I knew the apology had become real.
Not because she said she had changed.
May you like
Because I no longer had to manage her reaction to my freedom.
