Chapter 18 - Mother’s Day, One Year Later

Exactly one year after the restaurant disaster, Mom invited me to lunch.
Not brunch.
Not the same restaurant.
A small café near her townhouse.
Just us.
No Ryan.
No Daniel.
No flowers worth three hundred dollars.
She had placed one pink rose beside my plate.
I stared at it.
“Subtle.”
She smiled nervously.
“I almost canceled.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid today would hurt.”
“It does a little.”
She nodded.
Then slid an envelope toward me.
Inside was a handwritten card.
Emily,
Last Mother’s Day, I told you I wished I had never been your mother. The truth is that being your mother has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I was afraid your independence meant I had failed. Instead, my refusal to respect it nearly became the failure.
Thank you for not coming back before I learned how to love you without owning you.
Mom
I cried.
So did she.
Then she looked at me.
“I’m not asking you to forget.”
“Good.”
“I don’t want you to.”
I reached across the table.
“I don’t.”
She took my hand.
“But I’m glad we’re here.”
“So am I.”
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Ryan.
Tell Mom happy Mother’s Day. Also tell her I’m NOT paying for dessert.
I laughed.
Mom leaned over.
“What?”
I showed her.
She rolled her eyes.
“I raised terrible children.”
I looked at her.
For one second, we both froze.
Then she started laughing.
“Oh, that came out badly.”
I laughed harder.
The sentence that would once have hurt now felt completely different.
May you like
Because we were different.
