Chapter 16 - She Called Me From an Empty Kitchen

The first night in her townhouse, Mom called.
“I hate it.”
I smiled.
“The kitchen?”
“All of it.”
“Give it a week.”
“It’s tiny.”
“You’re one person.”
“That’s rude.”
“You raised me.”
She laughed.
Real laughter.
Then she became quiet.
“I’m lonely.”
Old me would have grabbed my keys.
New me asked, “Do you want company tomorrow?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“Dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Six-thirty?”
“That would be nice.”
No emergency.
No guilt.
No command.
A request.
The next evening, Daniel and I brought pasta.
Ryan brought salad.
Melissa brought wine.
We ate around Mom’s smaller table.
Nobody discussed money.
Nobody fought.
Halfway through dinner, I realized something extraordinary.
This was the family Mom claimed she had always wanted.
May you like
And it only became possible after I stopped holding it together by force.
