Chapter 14 - The Day Ryan Chose a Side

Ryan’s real test came when several relatives demanded I resume helping Mom financially.

At Aunt Carol’s birthday, Uncle Peter said, “Emily’s doing well. Why should Diane struggle?”

Before I could answer, Ryan did.

“She shouldn’t.”

I looked at him.

He continued.

“Because Mom isn’t struggling.”

Mom nodded.

“I can pay my bills.”

Peter shrugged.

“But Emily has more.”

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“That doesn’t make her money communal property.”

The table went silent.

My brother—the man who once appeared at my office demanding I restore his business payments—was defending my boundaries.

Later I hugged him.

He laughed.

“Don’t make it weird.”

“It’s already weird.”

Melissa eventually returned home.

Not because Ryan promised change.

Because for nearly a year, he demonstrated it.

Budgeting.

Counseling.

No secret accounts.

No borrowing from family.

He even paid me back a portion of what I had given him.

I tried to refuse.

He insisted.

“It’s not about the amount.”

He was right.

The first payment was only five hundred dollars.

But I framed the receipt.

Not because I needed repayment.

May you like

Because accountability had finally entered our family.
