Chapter 12 - The Woman They Tried to Silence

"Everybody out."
Dante carried Arya.
Luca ran toward the security panel.
Dead.
Mara smelled smoke.
Not upstairs.
Below.
"The archive."
Dante looked at her.
They had seen this before.
But this fire was different.
Multiple ignition points.
Designed not to destroy one room.
Designed to trap everyone inside.
Mrs. Alvarez had once managed the household systems.
Helena had access through Arya's medical equipment.
Architect had spent years learning every weakness.
The eastern hallway filled with smoke.
Dante wrapped Arya in a blanket.
"Stay behind me."
Mara coughed.
"You really need another phrase."
"Not now."
They reached the service staircase.
Locked.
Luca kicked the door.
Nothing.
Mara remembered the old underground corridor.
"The wine cellar exit."
"Fire started there."
"The maintenance passage exits outside."
Dante understood.
They moved downward.
Heat intensified.
Smoke crawled across the ceiling.
Arya began panicking.
Mara held her hand while Dante carried her.
"One corner."
Arya coughed.
"Other corner."
They reached the hidden passage.
Luca forced the iron door.
Behind them something exploded.
Glass shattered upstairs.
Mara screamed.
Dante covered her with his body.
For several seconds she felt only his weight and heat.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
"Arya?"
"Yes."
They escaped through the maintenance door moments before flames broke through the western windows.
Snow melted against the burning exterior.
Dante stood outside holding his daughter as part of the home Vivien had designed burned behind him.
Firefighters arrived.
Mara looked at Dante.
He wasn't watching the flames.
He was watching Arya.
Things could be replaced.
That realization had changed him.
Helena Ward called twenty minutes later.
Dante answered on speaker.
"You failed."
Helena laughed softly.
"Did I?"
"You tried to kill a child."
"No. Arya was never supposed to die."
"Then why sedate her?"
"To make sure she didn't interfere."
"With what?"
"Retrieving Vivien's final archive."
Dante looked toward the burning house.
"It's gone."
"I doubt that."
Mara understood.
Helena believed they had moved it.
"Where are you?"
"Ask Mara."
Everyone looked at her.
Mara frowned.
"I don't know."
Helena spoke directly.
"Your sister always told you where she went when she needed to think."
Mara's pulse jumped.
Emily's favorite place.
A church near the river.
St. Michael's.
Mara whispered the name.
Helena laughed.
"Good girl."
The call ended.
Dante immediately said, "You're not going."
"Yes, I am."
"No."
"She asked for me."
"Exactly."
Mara stepped closer.
"Dante, Helena has spent years manipulating everyone around you. She expects you to respond with force."
"I respond effectively."
"Same problem."
Luca coughed to hide a laugh.
Dante ignored him.
"What do you suggest?"
"I go inside."
"Absolutely not."
"Unarmed."
"Worse."
"She wants to talk."
"People who burn houses rarely want conversation."
"She could have killed me already."
"She tried."
"Then she failed badly."
Dante stared.
Mara softened.
"Trust me."
That landed.
Dante's jaw tightened.
"Ten minutes."
"You can't keep assigning time limits."
"Eight."
"You're impossible."
"Seven."
Mara walked away before he reached six.
St. Michael's stood near the river, closed for renovation.
Mara entered through a side door.
Helena waited near the altar.
Fifty-two.
Elegant.
Gray-blonde hair.
A navy coat.
No visible weapon.
"You look like Emily," Helena said.
"So everyone tells me."
"She was much less cautious."
"She's dead."
"Yes."
Mara walked closer.
"Because of you?"
"No."
"You built the financial system."
"I designed ways to hide money."
"For trafficking."
"For rescue operations."
"Everyone keeps saying it started noble."
"Because it did."
Helena's eyes hardened.
"Do you know how many children government systems lost every year? Emily did. Vivien did. I did."
"And your solution became another system nobody could supervise."
"Supervision is why institutions fail."
"No. Lack of accountability is why people like you convince yourselves you're necessary."
Helena smiled.
"Vivien said something similar."
"You killed her."
"I redirected Rosa's fear."
Mara stared.
"Meaning?"
"I told Rosa Arya had the ledger."
"You knew she might attack the car."
"Yes."
"That's murder."
"Strategy."
Mara felt disgust.
"Why bring me and Dante together?"
Helena walked toward a window.
"Because Vivien hid something from me."
"What?"
"The identities of Lighthouse's safe-house leaders."
"Why do you want them?"
"Because those people stole children from us."
"Rescued."
"Words."
"Important words."
Helena smiled.
"This is why Vivien chose you."
"She chose me because I was Emily's sister."
"No."
Helena shook her head.
"She chose you because unlike the rest of us, you still believe rules can matter."
Mara folded her arms.
"Terrible insult."
"You misunderstand. It's why you're dangerous."
"To you."
"Yes."
Helena turned.
"Give me the Lighthouse key."
"No."
"Mara."
"No."
"Then Dante will spend the rest of his life answering for crimes his father committed."
"Maybe."
Helena looked surprised.
"He may lose everything."
"Maybe."
"And you're willing to let that happen?"
Mara thought of Dante telling federal investigators the truth.
"He's willing."
That answer finally unsettled Helena.
Her entire strategy depended on Dante protecting the Romano empire.
But he no longer intended to.
Helena's phone vibrated.
She read something.
Her face changed.
"What?"
Mara smiled faintly.
"Federal agents received the Lighthouse financial records twenty minutes ago."
Helena stared.
"You didn't."
"Sofia did."
"No."
"And unlike your network, Lighthouse kept evidence of every legitimate rescue."
Helena stepped backward.
"You have no idea what you've done."
"I think we finally do."
A side door opened.
Dante entered.
Helena reached beneath her coat.
Mara shouted.
Dante moved.
A gunshot exploded.
Helena fell.
The weapon slid away.
Blood stained her shoulder.
Alive.
Dante crossed the distance in seconds.
He kicked the weapon aside.
Federal agents entered behind Luca.
Helena stared up at Dante.
"Your father would be ashamed."
Dante looked down at her.
For years those words might have destroyed him.
Now he smiled faintly.
"Good."
Helena was arrested.
The network began collapsing within hours.
But as agents led her away, she looked back at Mara.
"Ask Sofia why Emily chose December eighteenth."
Mara's heart stopped.
Helena smiled.
"You still don't know what your sister was doing on that road."
Mara turned toward Dante.
One final secret remained.
May you like
And this one belonged to Emily.
