Chapter 18 - The Promise Beneath the Snow

Mara did not want a large wedding.

Dante's original guest list contained four hundred people.

Mara crossed out three hundred and seventy-two.

Dante objected.

"Some are business partners."

"Then conduct business with them."

"Some are politicians."

"Even stronger reason."

"Some would be offended."

"Excellent."

The final ceremony took place inside Harbor Light Community Center.

Exactly where they met.

Arya chose the flowers.

Sofia stood beside Mara.

Luca stood beside Dante and complained about his tie.

Vincent cried before the ceremony and denied it afterward.

Children from Vivien-Emily House folded paper stars for decorations.

One chair remained empty in the front row.

On it sat two photographs.

Emily.

Vivien.

Mara had worried that honoring Vivien at her wedding to Dante might feel strange.

Instead it felt honest.

Their story did not begin after grief.

It grew through it.

Before the ceremony, Arya entered Mara's room.

She wore a pale gold dress.

"You nervous?"

Mara smiled.

"A little."

"Papa is worse."

"Really?"

"He walked into a chair."

Mara laughed.

Arya held the old cardboard box.

Vivien's stars.

"I want you to have it."

Mara stared.

"No, sweetheart."

"Why?"

"This belongs to you."

Arya shook her head.

"Mommy used it to find you."

Mara's eyes filled.

"It still belongs to you."

"Then we share."

Mara hugged her.

"Deal."

Arya remained against her for several seconds.

Then whispered, "Can I call you Mom sometimes?"

Mara's heart stopped.

She pulled back.

"You never have to."

"I know."

"And calling me that doesn't change Mommy Vivien."

"I know."

"And if you change your mind—"

"Mara."

Arya sounded remarkably like Dante.

"Okay."

Arya smiled.

"Mom."

Mara cried instantly.

"Great. Makeup ruined."

Arya laughed.

Across the building, Dante stood alone near the corridor where he first saw Mara folding stars.

Luca found him.

"You look terrified."

"I've been shot with less anxiety."

"She'll show."

Dante looked at him.

"I know."

"Then what?"

Dante hesitated.

"What if I'm bad at this?"

"Marriage?"

"Normal life."

Luca laughed.

"We know you're bad at normal life."

"Helpful."

"But Mara knows too."

Dante looked toward the doors.

Luca's expression softened.

"Vivien loved who you could become."

A pause.

"Mara loves who you're trying to become."

Dante nodded.

"Thank you."

"Never repeat that."

"Agreed."

Music began.

Dante took his place.

Mara entered holding Arya's hand.

For one second Dante forgot every person in the room.

Mara wore a simple ivory dress.

Nothing dramatic.

Her dark-blonde hair was pinned loosely, the same way it had been the night they met.

Arya walked beside her carrying the star box.

When they reached Dante, Arya placed Mara's hand in his.

"Don't mess this up."

Guests laughed.

Dante whispered, "I'll try."

Their vows were simple.

Mara went first.

"I cannot promise to agree with you."

Dante smiled.

"Everyone knows."

"I cannot promise that our life will become easy."

She looked toward Arya.

"But I promise there will be no secret room in our marriage where fear gets to make decisions alone."

Dante's expression changed.

Mara squeezed his hand.

"I promise to tell you when you're wrong."

"You already do."

"Quiet."

More laughter.

"And I promise to choose this family without pretending the people we lost have to disappear for us to move forward."

Dante's eyes glistened.

His turn.

"I spent most of my life believing love meant protection."

He looked at Arya.

"Then I learned protection without trust becomes another cage."

Mara swallowed.

"I can't promise I'll stop trying to control everything."

She raised an eyebrow.

"But I promise I'll notice when I'm doing it."

"Progress."

He smiled.

"And I promise every day that Arya and you will know the difference between being protected and being owned."

He paused.

"I choose you, Mara."

Not because fate demanded it.

Not because Vivien had predicted anything.

Not because Emily left instructions.

Simply because he chose her.

"And I'll keep choosing you when you become extremely irritating."

Mara laughed through tears.

They married beneath hundreds of paper stars.

Afterward, Mara stepped outside.

Snow had begun falling.

Dante joined her.

"Running already?"

"Considering it."

"Too late."

"See? Ownership language."

He sighed.

"Marriage has been difficult for six minutes."

Mara kissed him.

A photographer captured the moment from inside.

The picture eventually became Arya's favorite.

Not because of Dante or Mara.

Because behind them, children from Harbor Light had pressed their faces against the window making ridiculous expressions.

Life refused to stay cinematic.

Mara preferred it that way.

Months later, Lighthouse opened three new centers.

Dante's probation continued without violation.

His remaining companies became boring.

He discovered boring could be profitable.

Luca discovered taxes were more frightening than gang wars.

Sofia graduated.

Vincent began teaching fundraising workshops and irritated everyone.

Arya turned nine.

At her birthday she stood before a cake decorated with stars.

"Make a wish," Mara said.

Arya closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

"No."

Dante frowned.

"No wish?"

"I don't need one."

Mara looked at Dante.

Arya blew out the candles.

Later that evening Mara found her writing inside a paper star.

"What did you write?"

"Secret."

"Fair."

Arya folded it and placed it inside Vivien's old box.

Years later, Mara would open that star with Arya's permission.

Inside were six words.

I wanted everyone to stay. They did.

But on that birthday, the words remained hidden.

Not every secret was dangerous.

May you like

Some secrets were simply hopes waiting for time to prove them true.
