Chapter 9 - Only Four People Knew

"Rosa?"

Dante's voice barely carried.

Mrs. Alvarez looked different without the warm cardigan she wore around the house.

Her gray hair was pulled tightly back.

No gentle smile.

No softness.

A gun rested steadily in her hand.

Arya stared at her.

"Mrs. A?"

The older woman did not look at the child.

Dante's expression was disbelief stripped down to something colder.

"You raised my daughter."

"I protected your daughter."

"You kidnapped her."

"I brought her somewhere safe."

Mara stared.

"Safe from who?"

Rosa looked at her.

"Men like him."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"You killed Vivien."

A flicker.

"No."

"You arranged the crash."

"I stopped her from destroying everything."

"That's yes."

Rosa's eyes filled.

"You don't understand what your father built."

"I understand enough."

"No, you don't."

She pointed the gun toward him.

"Thousands of people depended on that network."

"For trafficking children?"

"For moving people nobody else would help."

Mara stepped forward.

"Emily found children being sold."

"Some men corrupted it."

"Gabriel?"

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"Among others."

Rosa glanced toward him with contempt.

"Salvatore's system began as an underground relocation network. Immigrant families. Women escaping abusive men. Children with nowhere to go."

Dante stared.

"My father?"

"Before power poisoned him."

"And you?"

"I was there from the beginning."

Mara understood.

Shepherd.

Not because she hunted children.

Because she moved them.

At least originally.

"What happened?" Mara asked.

Rosa looked toward the frozen lake.

"Money."

One word.

"Men discovered undocumented children could disappear without paperwork."

Her mouth tightened.

"Salvatore allowed it."

Dante's face hardened.

"And you stayed."

"I tried to control what I could."

"By murdering Emily?"

"Emily was going to expose everything. Including safe locations containing hundreds of vulnerable families."

Mara's eyes burned.

"So you killed her."

Rosa said nothing.

That silence was answer enough.

Mara lunged.

Dante caught her around the waist.

"No."

"She killed my sister!"

"I know."

Rosa's gun trembled slightly.

"Emily wasn't supposed to be in that car."

Mara stopped struggling.

"What?"

"Sofia was."

Silence.

"Emily changed vehicles at the last minute."

Mara stared.

"You intended to kill a child?"

"I intended to stop someone who had memorized every location we protected."

"She was twelve!"

"I know."

Rosa finally looked ashamed.

"That was the day I stopped believing I could control what we'd become."

Dante's voice cut through.

"But two years later you killed Vivien."

Rosa closed her eyes.

"Vivien wouldn't stop."

"You lived in our house."

"To protect Arya."

"You held my wife's hand."

"I loved Vivien."

Dante laughed once.

A broken sound.

"You have a strange definition of love."

Rosa's expression crumbled.

"You think I don't know that?"

Gabriel became impatient.

"This is touching, but we have a problem."

Everyone looked toward him.

"We need Sofia."

Rosa turned her weapon toward Gabriel.

"No."

His smile vanished.

"You said you'd bring Mara."

"I brought her."

"She knows the location."

"She led us here."

"Exactly."

Mara looked around.

"This is where Sofia lived."

Rosa nodded.

"Years ago."

"Where is she now?"

"No idea."

Gabriel's patience broke.

"Bull."

He drew his weapon.

Dante raised his.

Three guns.

Arya started crying.

Mara moved toward her.

Gabriel shouted, "Stay!"

Arya screamed.

Then something happened.

A light switched on outside.

A cabin across the frozen lake.

One flash.

Off.

Then on twice.

Mara's heart stopped.

She remembered.

Emily had taught her signals at summer camp.

One.

Pause.

Two.

Come alone.

Mara looked toward the window.

Rosa saw it too.

"Sofia."

Gabriel turned.

That distraction was enough.

Dante moved.

One shot struck Gabriel's weapon.

It flew from his hand.

Luca and security rushed in from outside.

Rosa lowered her gun.

Dante crossed the room and grabbed Arya.

She threw both arms around his neck.

Mara knelt beside them.

For several seconds nothing else mattered.

Then Dante looked toward Rosa.

"Take her."

Rosa did not resist.

Luca cuffed her.

Gabriel smiled from the floor.

"You think you've won?"

Dante looked at him.

"No."

Gabriel laughed.

"Then you're smarter than your father."

"What do you mean?"

"The Calumet shipment."

Dante froze.

"You were worried someone rerouted it."

Gabriel's grin widened.

"You never asked where."

Luca stepped forward.

"Where?"

"Federal evidence warehouse."

Dante stared.

Gabriel continued.

"The original records were anonymously delivered to investigators this morning."

Mara frowned.

"You sent them?"

"No."

"Rosa?"

Rosa shook her head.

Gabriel laughed again.

"Sofia."

Dante looked toward the light across the lake.

Sofia wasn't hiding anymore.

She was fighting back.

Mara walked onto the snow-covered dock.

"Wait," Dante said.

"She asked me alone."

"I don't care."

"Dante."

"No."

Mara looked at him.

"What if she's afraid of you?"

"Most sensible people are."

"This isn't funny."

"I'm not joking."

Arya touched his hand.

"Papa."

He looked down.

"Let Mara go."

Dante stared at his daughter.

Mara waited.

Finally he nodded.

"Five minutes."

"You don't get to—"

"Five."

Mara walked across the frozen path bordering the lake.

At the opposite cabin, a woman stood in the doorway.

Twenty years old now.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A scar across one eyebrow.

"Sofia?"

The woman looked at Mara.

"You look like Emily."

Mara's throat closed.

"You knew my sister."

Sofia nodded.

"She saved me."

Mara cried before she could stop herself.

Sofia hugged her.

For years, Mara had imagined Emily's final weeks as only fear.

Now suddenly there was proof they had contained courage too.

When they separated, Sofia held out a flash drive.

"Everything is here."

"The ledger?"

"Names. Payments. Recordings. Including Vivien."

Mara looked toward the other cabin.

"Dante needs to hear."

"I know."

Sofia hesitated.

"But there is something he won't survive easily."

"What?"

Sofia's eyes moved toward Arya.

"Vivien's crash wasn't intended to kill Vivien."

Mara's blood chilled.

"Who was the target?"

Sofia looked directly at her.

May you like

"Arya."
