Chapter 13 - Dante’s Impossible Choice

Emily had not been driving home.

That was the first lie.

Sofia revealed the truth the next morning.

They sat in a borrowed apartment while Dante's mansion remained under investigation.

Mara held Emily's old photograph.

"Tell me."

Sofia looked ashamed.

"She was taking me to meet Vivien."

Mara stared.

"Why?"

"Because Vivien had agreed to hide me."

"Then why did Emily die alone?"

"She didn't."

Mara stopped breathing.

"There was another child in the car."

"Who?"

Sofia cried.

"I don't know her real name."

Dante leaned forward.

"What happened?"

"Emily realized we were followed. She stopped at a gas station and made me get out. Another woman collected me."

"Vivien?"

"No."

"Rosa?"

"No."

"Who?"

"Luca's mother."

Everyone turned.

Luca stared.

"My mother?"

Sofia nodded.

"Teresa Ferraro."

Luca sank back.

His mother had died three years ago without ever telling him.

"Who stayed in Emily's car?"

"A girl named Anna."

"Age?" Mara asked.

"Sixteen."

"Did she die?"

"No."

Mara frowned.

"Police reports said only Emily was found."

"Anna escaped before the car burned."

Dante's eyes sharpened.

"Where is she?"

Sofia looked toward him.

"That's the problem."

Anna eventually joined the network.

Changed names.

Changed identities.

And according to Sofia, Anna became obsessed with revenge against every Romano.

Mara whispered, "Helena?"

"No."

"Rosa?"

"No."

Sofia placed a photograph down.

A teenage girl.

Dante stared.

He knew the face.

Older now.

Different hair.

But unmistakable.

His personal executive assistant.

Natalie Crane.

The woman who controlled his calendar.

Read his private correspondence.

Knew where he went.

Knew when Arya traveled.

Dante stood.

"Where is she?"

Luca called security.

Natalie's apartment was empty.

Her office cleared.

Computer wiped.

Then Dante's phone buzzed.

A video.

Natalie appeared on screen.

Behind her stood industrial tanks.

"Dante."

She smiled.

"By now, you know."

His jaw tightened.

"Where are you?"

"You spent weeks searching for Shepherd and Architect."

"Both are finished."

"Neither mattered."

Mara whispered, "She rerouted Calumet."

Natalie heard.

"Good, Mara."

She smiled.

"I wondered when you'd catch up."

Dante stepped toward the phone.

"What do you want?"

"You to choose."

"Between?"

"Your empire and the truth."

Dante's expression hardened.

"The truth is already with federal agents."

"Not all of it."

Natalie held up a drive.

"This contains records personally signed by Salvatore Romano."

"He's dead."

"And several by you."

Dante froze.

Luca looked at him.

"What records?"

Natalie answered.

"Warehouse purchases. Transportation contracts. Shell companies."

Dante understood.

Documents he had signed after inheriting the organization.

He hadn't known their historic purpose.

But legally?

Ignorance might not save him.

"If released without context," Natalie said, "you look like the man who continued your father's network."

Mara spoke.

"What do you want?"

"Destroy every remaining Romano shell company. Transfer the assets to victim funds."

Dante didn't hesitate.

"Done."

Natalie's smile vanished slightly.

"And confess publicly."

"Done."

"Dante," Luca said quietly.

He ignored him.

Natalie stared at the screen.

"You could go to prison."

"I know."

"Arya loses you."

That was the blade.

Mara saw it land.

Dante became silent.

Natalie continued.

"Your father protected his empire because he said it was for family."

Dante looked toward Arya's bedroom.

"What do you want me to confess to?"

"Everything."

"Things I didn't do?"

"Yes."

Mara stepped in front of him.

"No."

Natalie smiled.

"There it is."

Mara glared.

"You don't want justice. You want a Romano punished."

"Correct."

"Then you're no better than them."

Natalie's face hardened.

"My parents sold me into one of Salvatore's facilities."

Mara stopped.

"I was fourteen. Emily got me out. Do you know what happened to her because of me?"

"She chose to help you."

"She died."

"That isn't your fault."

"Tell yourself whatever counselors say."

Mara's eyes filled.

"My sister did not die so you could spend your life becoming the people she fought."

Natalie faltered.

"She would want Dante to answer."

"For his actions. Not his father's."

Silence.

Dante looked at Mara.

She continued.

"Release the evidence. All of it. Let prosecutors decide what belongs to him."

Natalie's mouth tightened.

"You trust justice?"

"No."

Mara glanced at Dante.

"But I'm willing to make it accountable."

The video ended.

Dante sat down.

"I'll confess."

Mara turned.

"No."

"If it protects Arya—"

"From what? Having a father?"

"If Natalie releases documents—"

"Then we tell the truth."

"They may not believe me."

"Then fight."

He looked exhausted.

"I've fought my whole life."

"Maybe differently this time."

Dante stared.

"What if I lose?"

Mara sat beside him.

"Then Arya knows her father chose truth instead of an empire."

That evening Dante called a press conference.

Against every lawyer's recommendation.

He stood before cameras.

Mara watched from behind the room.

"My name is Dante Romano. Companies under my control were used for crimes that began before I inherited them and continued during years when I failed to ask what I should have asked."

Reporters shouted.

Dante continued.

"I will cooperate fully. Assets tied to those operations will be surrendered. I will not use my name, money, or influence to obstruct the investigation."

Mara's chest tightened.

He looked directly toward the camera.

"I cannot change what my family did."

A pause.

"But I can decide what my daughter inherits from me."

The press conference went viral within hours.

Some called it calculated.

Others called it extraordinary.

Federal prosecutors still opened investigations.

Stock prices fell.

Business partners fled.

Dante lost millions before breakfast.

He seemed strangely relieved.

But at noon Luca received an alert.

Natalie had accessed a private Romano airfield.

Security footage showed her loading fuel containers into a vehicle.

Dante frowned.

"Where is she going?"

Luca enlarged the map.

The road led toward one place.

The abandoned warehouse at Calumet Harbor.

The building where old Romano records were stored.

And beneath it sat something far more dangerous than paperwork.

A fuel vault built decades earlier.

If Natalie ignited it, every surviving piece of physical evidence could disappear.

Along with anyone she lured inside.

Dante's phone rang.

Natalie.

He answered.

"Come alone."

Then she added one sentence.

May you like

"Or the truth about Emily dies with me."
