Chapter 14 - The Trap at Calumet Harbor

Dante did not go alone.

He intended to.

Mara discovered the plan because subtlety was not one of his strengths when he was afraid.

"You aren't coming."

She put on her coat.

"Interesting."

"Mara."

"Still coming."

"Natalie wants me."

"She also spent twelve years watching me."

"Exactly."

"You're getting repetitive."

Dante caught her arm.

"This isn't a joke."

Mara looked at his hand.

He released her immediately.

"I know."

She softened.

"But Emily's truth belongs to me too."

They drove separately from law enforcement.

Luca complained.

Dante ignored him.

Calumet Harbor looked abandoned beneath gray winter clouds.

Natalie's vehicle stood near warehouse fourteen.

The door was open.

Inside, old machinery disappeared into shadows.

"Dante!" Natalie called.

He entered.

Mara remained behind a concrete barrier despite promising she would stay outside.

Technically, she told herself, the barrier was near the entrance.

Natalie stood above the fuel vault.

A pistol in one hand.

A trigger device in the other.

"Alone."

Dante looked around.

"I am."

Mara rolled her eyes silently.

Liar.

Natalie smiled.

"Do you know what Emily said before she died?"

Dante stopped.

"No."

"I do."

"Tell me."

"She told me not to hate you."

Dante frowned.

"She didn't know me."

"She knew Vivien."

Natalie's eyes filled.

"Vivien told her you were different."

"She was wrong about many things."

"Was she?"

Dante looked toward the trigger.

"What do you actually want?"

"I wanted your father alive."

"So did many enemies."

"I wanted him to know exactly what he created."

"He never did."

"No."

Natalie laughed bitterly.

"So I spent years making sure his son would."

Dante understood.

The messages.

The shipment.

The clues.

Natalie had exposed the network piece by piece.

"You sent Emily's phone."

"Yes."

"Destroyed Mara's apartment?"

"No."

"Gabriel?"

"Yes."

"Harbor Light?"

"I arranged the traffic obstruction."

Dante's jaw tightened.

"You triggered Arya's panic."

"I didn't know she would run into traffic."

"You used a terrified child."

"I needed Mara inside your house."

"Why?"

"Vivien's notes said Mara would unlock Lighthouse."

Mara stepped from hiding.

"Then you should have asked."

Natalie spun the gun toward her.

Dante immediately moved between them.

Natalie laughed.

"Of course."

Mara stayed behind him.

"You manipulated Arya because you assumed everyone else would behave like pieces on a board."

Natalie's hand shook.

"Don't lecture me."

"Emily would."

"Stop using her name!"

"She was my sister."

"She saved my life!"

"Then honor it."

Natalie lowered the weapon half an inch.

Mara stepped around Dante.

He whispered, "Don't."

She ignored him.

"Emily spent her life saving people. You spent twelve years preparing to destroy yourself."

Natalie's eyes filled.

"You didn't know what they did."

"No."

Mara walked closer.

"But I know what loss does when you keep feeding it."

Natalie looked toward the fuel vault.

"I have nothing."

"That's not true."

"What?"

"You have the chance to stop."

A tear slid down Natalie's cheek.

"It's too late."

"No."

Sirens approached outside.

Natalie looked toward the doors.

"They'll put me in prison."

"Probably."

She laughed through tears.

"Terrible sales pitch."

"But you'll be alive."

Natalie's thumb rested on the trigger.

Mara's breathing slowed.

One corner.

Other corner.

Then turn.

She imagined Emily beside her.

"You said Emily spoke before the crash."

Natalie looked at her.

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Natalie's mouth trembled.

"She said, 'You don't owe me revenge.'"

Mara closed her eyes.

Of course.

Of course Emily had understood even then.

"What else?"

"She said, 'Live long enough to become someone they couldn't imagine.'"

Natalie's shoulders collapsed.

The trigger slipped from her hand.

Dante kicked it away.

Federal agents entered.

Natalie surrendered.

No explosion.

No heroic gunfight.

No body on the floor.

Just a broken woman finally deciding not to turn grief into another grave.

As officers led her away, she looked at Mara.

"There's something beneath the vault."

"What?"

"Emily left it there."

Agents searched after explosives teams cleared the area.

Beneath an old floor plate sat a waterproof steel box.

Inside were letters.

Dozens.

Emily had written them during the final months of her life.

One for Mara.

Mara opened it with shaking hands.

Little Sparrow,

If you're reading this, I'm probably not there to explain why I lied so much.

Mara laughed through tears.

"At least she knew."

Dante stood quietly nearby.

The letter continued.

I never wanted you to inherit my fight.

I wanted you to inherit my belief that people can be protected without being owned.

That power means nothing unless someone is willing to limit it.

If Vivien needs you, help her only if you choose.

If Dante needs you, do not be intimidated by him. Vivien says his greatest weakness is that nobody tells him when he's being an ass.

Mara burst out laughing.

Dante frowned.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Read it."

"Absolutely not."

He reached for the letter.

She pulled it away.

For the first time in weeks, they laughed without danger breathing down their necks.

Then Mara continued reading silently.

One final paragraph changed her expression.

If anything happens to Vivien too, look after Arya if life brings you to her. Not because she is a Romano. Because she is a child who may grow up surrounded by ghosts.

And if Dante is still standing after learning the truth, remind him that survival isn't the same as living.

Mara looked at Dante.

He saw the tears.

"What?"

She folded the letter.

"Emily left me instructions."

"About?"

"You."

"That sounds concerning."

"It is."

They walked outside.

Police lights reflected across frozen pavement.

For the first time, the Calumet warehouses belonged to investigators instead of the Romano family.

Dante stared at them.

"It's over."

Mara shook her head.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because now you have to live with what comes after."

His phone vibrated.

A message from his attorney.

Federal prosecutors were formally charging Dante with conspiracy and financial offenses tied to the shell companies he had unknowingly maintained.

Dante read it silently.

Mara saw his expression.

"What?"

He handed her the phone.

She stared at the charges.

Maximum sentence: twelve years.

The battle against the network had ended.

The battle for Dante's future was only beginning.
