Chapter 17 - A House Without Secrets

The first child arrived on a Tuesday.
His name was Marcus.
Nine years old.
He carried everything he owned in a grocery bag and refused to enter the front door.
Mara sat on the steps.
Not close.
Not asking questions.
She folded a paper star.
One corner.
Then another.
From inside, Dante watched.
Arya stood beside him.
"She's doing it."
"Yes."
"Like she did with me."
"Yes."
Marcus eventually sat three steps below Mara.
She slid the star toward him.
He picked it up.
An hour later he entered.
The mansion had been legally separated from Dante's personal residence. A smaller home had been renovated on adjacent land for him and Arya.
Mara maintained her apartment.
Mostly.
Her toothbrush had somehow appeared in Dante's bathroom.
Then clothes.
Then books.
Then an entire shelf of tea Dante claimed smelled like grass.
She denied moving in.
Everyone else stopped pretending.
The original mansion became the Vivien-Emily House.
Mara insisted both names appear.
Dante insisted Emily come second because Vivien would complain otherwise.
Mara won that argument too.
Children referred by hospitals and social services stayed temporarily while safe placements were arranged.
No secret transfers.
No hidden identities controlled by one person.
Every decision documented.
Independent legal advocates.
Outside audits.
The exact opposite of Salvatore's network.
One afternoon Mara found Dante in the former secret archive.
The black binders were gone.
Shelves now held art supplies.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing."
"Suspicious."
Dante held up a box.
Paper stars.
Hundreds.
Each child who stayed at the house could fold one.
Some wrote fears inside.
Others hopes.
Nobody opened them without permission.
Mara touched a blue one.
"This was your idea?"
"Arya's."
"Of course."
Dante looked around.
"Do you miss it?"
"My archive?"
"Control."
He considered.
"Sometimes."
Mara smiled.
"At least you're honest."
"I hate not knowing."
"I know."
"But I learned something."
"What?"
"Knowing everything didn't save Vivien."
Mara's expression softened.
"Trust might have helped."
"Maybe."
He touched her hand.
"I'm working on it."
"Slowly."
"Painfully."
"Very."
He kissed her.
The door opened.
Arya groaned.
"Again?"
Mara stepped away.
"Knock."
"It's my old house."
"Still knock."
Arya held up an envelope.
"This came."
Dante took it.
No return address.
His body tightened automatically.
Mara noticed.
"Open it."
Inside was a photograph.
Rosa Alvarez in prison.
Beside it a letter.
Dante read silently.
Then handed it to Mara.
Rosa had given investigators one final set of names.
Three judges.
Two former police officials.
A private adoption agency.
The last major surviving branch of the network.
Her cooperation led to arrests.
At the bottom she wrote:
I know helping now does not undo what I did.
Do not tell Arya I was good.
Tell her I had chances to choose differently and waited too long.
Maybe that truth will be more useful.
Mara folded the letter.
"Will you tell her?"
"When she's older."
"Good."
Dante looked at the photograph.
"I spent months wanting to kill her."
"I know."
"Part of me still does."
"I know."
"Does that bother you?"
"Less than it would bother me if you pretended otherwise."
Dante nodded.
Mara continued.
"What matters is you didn't."
That was how healing worked in their strange family.
Not by pretending darkness never existed.
By refusing to let it drive.
Thanksgiving came.
Sofia joined them.
Luca brought a woman nobody had met and became furious when everyone asked questions.
Vincent complained about food.
Arya decorated the table with stars.
Children from Vivien-Emily House ate in the large dining room next door.
Dante stood between both buildings for a moment.
Snow threatened in the distance.
A year earlier, his world had consisted of locked gates and people paid to obey him.
Now a ten-year-old boy was yelling because someone had stolen a dinner roll.
Arya was laughing.
Mara was arguing with Vincent.
Sofia was helping children decorate cookies.
It was chaos.
Dante smiled.
Vivien would have loved it.
The thought no longer destroyed him.
It hurt.
But pain and gratitude could live in the same place.
Mara noticed him.
"You okay?"
"Yes."
"That looked suspiciously emotional."
"Don't tell anyone."
"Your reputation?"
"Exactly."
She took his hand.
"Come inside."
For the first time, he did not look back at the gate.
December eighteenth arrived.
The anniversary of Emily's death.
Then Vivien's crash.
Mara and Dante went together to the curve beside the road.
No press.
No security visible.
They placed two bouquets near the barrier.
Mara touched Emily's name on a small memorial plaque.
Dante stood beside Vivien's.
"I used to come here alone."
"Every year?"
"Yes."
"What did you do?"
"Blamed myself."
Mara slipped her hand into his.
"And now?"
Dante looked at the road.
"Miss her."
"Better."
"Still hurts."
"It's supposed to."
He looked at Mara.
"Your counseling license is making you unbearable again."
"Good."
Snow began falling.
Dante reached inside his coat.
Mara frowned.
"What?"
He removed a folded paper star.
She laughed.
"Did you make that?"
"It took forty minutes."
"That's terrible."
"Open it."
Mara unfolded it.
There was writing inside.
You made the quiet stop for both of us.
Mara looked up.
Dante had another object in his hand now.
A ring.
She stopped breathing.
"No."
His expression changed.
"No?"
"I mean, no, you're not doing this beside the road where our dead family members were murdered."
Dante stared.
"I thought it was meaningful."
"It's horrifying."
He looked genuinely confused.
Mara began laughing.
Then crying.
"Move."
"What?"
"Somewhere less traumatic."
"You're ruining this."
"Good."
They drove fifteen minutes to the lake.
Snow fell across the water.
Dante tried again.
"Mara Ellison—"
"Yes."
He stopped.
"I haven't asked."
"I know."
"You criticized my proposal and then interrupted it."
"Yes."
He stared.
She smiled through tears.
"Yes, Dante."
He finally laughed.
Then placed the ring on her finger.
When they returned home, Arya had made a sign.
SHE SAID YES?
Dante stared at Luca.
"You told her."
"I told no one."
Arya smiled proudly.
"I put tracker on your car."
Everyone turned toward Dante.
Mara crossed her arms.
"Your daughter."
Dante sighed.
"Definitely Vivien's."
May you like
For once, the secret inside the Romano family made everyone laugh.
