Chapter 10 - The Box Sarah Left Behind

The box was small enough to fit beneath my arm.

It had waited eighteen years in a bank deposit vault.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

A silver necklace.

And a videotape.

Tessa found an old player.

Sarah appeared on the television.

Young.

Healthy.

Pregnant.

I stopped breathing.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If Jack is watching this, he probably ignored every instruction I gave him.”

Tessa laughed through tears.

I did too.

Sarah talked for forty minutes.

About fear.

About becoming parents.

About the man she believed I could become.

Then she said something that destroyed the guilt I had carried for eleven years.

“Jack thinks his past makes him dangerous. He doesn’t understand that the reason I trust him is because he knows exactly what violence costs.”

I covered my face.

Tessa took my hand.

Sarah’s final recorded words were for our unborn daughter.

“You may someday discover your father was not always the quiet mechanic you know. Don’t judge him only by the battles he fought. Judge him by the battles he learned not to fight.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Tessa leaned against me.

“I wish I remembered her better.”

I kissed her forehead.

“I’ll help.”

And for the next several weeks, that was exactly what we did.
