Chapter 13 - Roland Kessler’s Last Fortune

Roland lost most of his company.

But he didn’t go to prison.

Investigators separated his unethical behavior from Wade’s criminal actions.

Kessler Continental survived as a much smaller company.

Roland moved into an ordinary house.

He hated it.

Then something strange happened.

He started working.

Actually working.

He visited warehouses.

Talked to drivers.

Learned names.

One afternoon, he came to the youth garage carrying a check.

I refused it.

He frowned.

“It’s legitimate.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because you’re trying to buy forgiveness.”

His face hardened.

Then softened.

“What should I do?”

“Show up.”

So he did.

Every Saturday.

At first nobody trusted him.

Eventually, they tolerated him.

Months later, some even liked him.

Money had once insulated Roland from consequences.

Losing it forced him to meet people.

It might have been the best thing that ever happened to him.
