Chapter 15 - Tessa’s Decision

Tessa graduated high school the following spring.
I cried.
She photographed it.
Blackmail material.
Afterward she announced she had been accepted into an engineering program in Seattle.
My heart broke.
I smiled anyway.
“You should go.”
“You’re not going to tell me it’s dangerous?”
“Seattle?”
“Living alone.”
“Extremely dangerous.”
“Dad.”
I laughed.
Then she hugged me.
“You gave up everything for me.”
“No.”
“Yes, you did.”
I shook my head.
“You were never something I gave things up for.”
She looked confused.
“You were what I chose.”
Her eyes filled.
Mine did too.
That summer we rebuilt another motorcycle together.
It would be hers.
On the fuel tank, she painted a tiny black ridge beneath a sunrise.
For Sarah.
For me.
May you like
For everything we had survived.
