Chapter 18 - Eleven Years of Silence

The shop became quiet without Tessa.

Too quiet.

Then one afternoon, she called.

“Dad, check your email.”

A photograph appeared.

Tessa stood beside her engineering classmates.

Behind them was a motorcycle project.

On the fuel tank:

MERCER ENGINEERING.

I laughed.

Then another photograph arrived.

A small plaque.

Dedicated to Sarah Mercer, who taught our family that strength is what we protect, not what we destroy.

I sat alone at my workbench for a long time.

Eleven years earlier, I had believed disappearing from my old life was the only way to save my daughter.

I had been partly right.

But eventually hiding became another kind of cage.

Travis broke that cage accidentally.

Roland nearly destroyed it.

Mason forced me to look backward.

Tessa taught me how to move forward.

That evening, I opened the steel compartment beneath my workbench.

The encrypted phone was still there.

I removed it.

Walked outside.

Rourke was waiting.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting rid of something.”

I destroyed the old phone.

Not because I hated my past.

Because I no longer needed a secret doorway into it.

My life wasn’t hidden anymore.

May you like

And neither was I.
