Chapter 16 - The Final Hearing

The final family-court hearing arrived almost eight months after Hazel's birth.

I walked into the courthouse without a cane.

Julian noticed.

This time, he didn't look surprised.

He looked tired.

The man who once entered my hospital room convinced that he controlled everything now waited for other people to decide what remained of his life.

The court reviewed evidence concerning Hazel separately from the financial litigation.

That distinction mattered to me.

I didn't want revenge disguised as parenting.

I wanted safety.

The hospital recording was discussed.

So were Julian's actions involving the bassinet and his effort to use my medical condition to obtain control.

Medical evaluations were reviewed.

Attorneys argued.

I listened.

When it was my turn to speak, I didn't call Julian a monster.

I didn't need to.

I described what happened.

Exactly.

Facts were enough.

Outside the courtroom, Julian stopped several feet away.

"She's beautiful," he said.

I knew he meant Hazel.

"She is."

"Does she look like me?"

The question hurt unexpectedly.

"Sometimes."

He nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I ruined everything."

It was the closest thing to accountability I had heard from him.

I didn't comfort him.

I didn't attack him.

I simply said, "Yes."

Then I left.
