Chapter 6 - My Father's Safe

There was a safe behind the walnut panel in my office.
Julian knew that.
What he didn't know was that my father had installed a second compartment inside it.
Dad trusted locks.
He trusted hidden locks more.
Sarah arranged for police and company security to enter the office before anyone touched the safe.
The outer compartment had been opened.
Files had been disturbed.
The second compartment remained sealed.
Inside were the original trust documents.
And something else.
A handwritten letter from my father.
Sarah brought it to the hospital.
I recognized his handwriting immediately.
For Genevieve, if you ever need to remember what belongs to you.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Dad had written the letter shortly before his death.
He reminded me that Vance Development wasn't valuable because of buildings.
It was valuable because people depended on it.
Employees.
Families.
Tenants.
Communities.
Then came the sentence that broke me.
Never surrender control of your life merely because someone you love insists that love requires it.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Had Dad suspected Julian?
Maybe.
Or perhaps he simply knew people better than I did.
Sarah showed me another document.
A provision in the trust.
If anyone attempted to obtain control of trust assets through coercion during medical incapacity, every temporary authority previously granted to that person could be suspended pending independent review.
Julian had triggered the very protection he had spent years trying to circumvent.
For the first time, I laughed.
It hurt.
But I laughed anyway.
"What's funny?" Sarah asked.
"My father."
She smiled.
"He usually was three moves ahead."
"So what happens now?"
"We freeze Julian's corporate authority."
"Do it."
"We initiate a forensic audit."
"Do it."
"And Genevieve?"
"Yes?"
"You need to prepare yourself."
"For what?"
"Julian will stop treating you like someone he can control."
Sarah's expression hardened.
"He'll start treating you like an enemy."
She was right.
That evening, Julian called.
I almost ignored it.
Instead, on Sarah's advice, I answered with another recording running.
"Genevieve."
His voice sounded different.
Softer.
"I'm sorry."
I said nothing.
"I panicked."
"About what?"
"The company. Your condition. Hazel. Everything."
"And Victoria?"
Silence.
"Was sleeping with her part of the panic?"
"Please."
"No. Explain."
He sighed.
"I made mistakes."
"Two million dollars is not a mistake."
The silence lasted too long.
Then Julian said something that confirmed Sarah's suspicions.
"You don't understand those transactions."
I looked at Sarah.
She was sitting across the room listening.
"I never told you we found transactions."
Julian stopped breathing for a moment.
Then the line went dead.
Sarah and I stared at each other.
He had just admitted knowledge of money he shouldn't have known we had discovered.
But Julian made an even larger mistake the following morning.
He filed for emergency guardianship.
