Chapter 18 - What I Built After Him

Vance Development changed after Julian.
I changed too.
We strengthened financial controls.
No executive could authorize certain transfers alone.
Independent audits became routine.
Medical incapacity rules were rewritten to prevent exploitation.
I established a parental emergency fund for employees dealing with childbirth complications or serious illness.
Sarah asked why.
"Because nobody should be lying in a hospital bed wondering whether getting sick means losing everything."
She smiled.
"Your father would approve."
I looked around my office.
Dad's photograph remained on the bookshelf.
Beside it was Hazel's.
"I hope so."
Julian's legal troubles continued independently.
Victoria accepted responsibility for her own role and cooperated with investigators.
Eleanor disappeared from my daily life.
I stopped following every development.
That surprised me.
For months, I thought justice meant watching every consequence land.
Eventually I learned that freedom meant not needing to.
My life was happening elsewhere.
Hazel learned to say "Mama."
Then "no."
Then, unfortunately, "mine."
She inherited that last word with impressive enthusiasm.
I laughed more.
Worked less at night.
Walked every morning.
Sometimes my left leg still tingled.
Sometimes fear returned without warning.
But fear no longer made decisions for me.
And then, nearly eighteen months after the night everything collapsed, Sarah called.
"It's finished."
I knew immediately what she meant.
"The divorce?"
"Final."
I sat quietly.
I expected triumph.
Instead, I felt peace.
"Genevieve?"
"I'm here."
"How do you feel?"
I looked through the glass wall of my office.

Hazel was visiting that afternoon, sitting on the carpet with her babysitter and stacking blocks.
"Free."
