Chapter 3 - The Woman Beneath the Pillow

Julian mistook silence for defeat.

That had always been his greatest weakness.

He believed quiet people were weak people.

He had never understood that my father taught me the opposite.

"Never interrupt someone who's revealing who they really are," Dad used to say.

So I listened.

Julian explained how everything would supposedly work.

I would sign temporary voting authority to him.

Eleanor would receive medical power of attorney.

The lake house would be transferred "for tax reasons."

Julian would take operational control of Vance Development until my recovery.

Temporary.

Every theft in the room came wrapped in that word.

I looked at the paperwork.

"And if I recover next month?"

Julian paused.

Victoria answered first.

"We'll deal with that when it happens."

I almost smiled.

A mistake.

Her mistake.

The phone had captured it.

"What happens to Hazel?"

Eleanor crossed her arms.

"Julian is her father."

"That's not what I asked."

"You need rest."

"What happens to my daughter?"

Julian finally looked at me.

"Nothing happens to Hazel."

"Then bring her back."

Silence.

I stared at him.

"Bring my baby back beside my bed."

His jaw tightened.

"No."

One word.

One more piece of evidence.

I closed my eyes.

Not because I was defeated.

Because I needed to control my breathing.

Sarah had told me to record.

She hadn't told me what came next.

I needed time.

And I needed them to keep talking.

So I whispered, "What if I don't sign?"

Julian stepped closer.

"We'll ask the hospital to declare you incompetent."

I opened my eyes.

"Based on what?"

"Postpartum confusion. Medication. Your neurological complications."

"I'm speaking clearly."

"For now."

Eleanor smiled.

"You'd be surprised what the right physician might conclude."

My stomach tightened.

Had they involved a doctor?

That possibility frightened me more than anything else they had said.

I looked toward the door.

Then something happened.

A shadow crossed the hallway.

Julian didn't notice.

Eleanor didn't notice.

Victoria was too busy smiling.

But I saw it.

Someone stopped outside.

A second later, the door opened.

Julian turned.

Victoria pulled his coat tighter around herself.

Eleanor went completely still.

Sarah Thorne stood in the doorway.

She carried her leather briefcase in one hand.

In the other was a clear evidence bag.

Her expression was perfectly calm.

She looked at Julian.

Then Victoria.

Then the documents scattered across my bed.

Finally, she looked at me.

Our eyes met.

I didn't say anything.

Neither did she.

She didn't need to.

Sarah stepped inside.

"Please keep talking, Julian," she said.

Julian's face changed.

Sarah smiled faintly.

May you like

"You're making this remarkably easy."

And for the first time that night, my husband looked afraid.
