Chapter 7 - The Helpless Woman

Julian's petition described me as confused, emotionally unstable, medically incapacitated, and incapable of managing my financial affairs.
Reading it felt like reading about a stranger.
Sarah read every page.
Then she smiled.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Because he filed this under oath."
"So?"
"So now he has committed himself to a story."
The hospital neurologist evaluated me.
Then a psychiatrist.
Then an independent physician.
I answered every question.
My name.
The date.
My daughter's name.
My company's revenue.
The names of our board members.
The details of the documents Julian had demanded.
I wasn't confused.
I wasn't incompetent.
I was paralyzed.
Those were not the same thing.
Sarah made sure everyone understood that distinction.
Meanwhile, physical therapy continued.
On the fourth morning, my left big toe moved.
Barely.
A fraction of an inch.
The therapist stared.
"Do that again."
I concentrated.
Nothing.
Then—
Movement.
I burst into tears.
Hazel was sleeping nearby.
I looked at her.
"Mommy's coming back."
But recovery wasn't the only battle.
The forensic audit uncovered another transfer.
Then another.
Then six more.
The total climbed beyond three million dollars.
Some money had gone to companies connected to Victoria's family.
Other funds had been routed through entities Sarah didn't recognize.
Julian had been building an escape route.
And apparently, he had expected to own Vance Development before anyone noticed.
Then we discovered why he had been so desperate to make me sign that night.
A major board vote was scheduled in twelve days.
If Julian controlled my voting proxy, he could restructure the company.
He could issue new shares.
Dilute my control.
And potentially sell valuable properties to entities he secretly influenced.
The paralysis hadn't created his plan.
It had accelerated it.
My medical emergency had given him what he believed was the perfect opportunity.
But there was something Julian still didn't know.
I could feel both feet now.
And every morning, sensation climbed slightly higher.
Sarah suggested we keep that information private.
"Why?"
"Because Julian built his strategy around believing you're helpless."
I understood immediately.
"Let him keep believing it."
Exactly.
So when Julian's attorney requested another evaluation, I remained in bed.
When Eleanor sent messages demanding access to Hazel, I didn't answer.
When Victoria vanished from work, we quietly traced her company records.
And when Julian told the board I might never return, I let him talk.
May you like
Because the board meeting was approaching.
And for once, Julian wouldn't know what was waiting behind the door.
