Chapter 11 - The Man Outside the Gate

Security footage from neighboring houses revealed a sedan parked near the Bennett home before Claire arrived.
Its driver photographed her vehicle.
Investigators traced the car to Gregory Shaw.
Shaw had personally watched Claire enter.
The false complaint was triggered when Claire discovered the office documents.
But how had Shaw known?
The answer came from Patricia.
She had texted him.
One message.
Claire saw the papers.
Claire stared at her mother.
Patricia looked devastated.
“I panicked.”
“You called the man stealing Grandma's estate?”
“I didn't know everything he was doing.”
“You knew enough.”
Patricia nodded.
There was no excuse left.
Claire walked outside.
General Mercer was waiting near one of the SUVs.
“You okay?”
“No, sir.”
“Good answer.”
Claire looked at him.
He explained that strength wasn't pretending betrayal didn't hurt.
Claire finally admitted what had bothered her most.
Not the money.
Not the forged signatures.
Not even the police.
“When those officers came in, my parents looked relieved.”
Mercer said nothing.
“They were happy because for one moment they thought the world had confirmed everything they believed about me.”
“That isn't a reflection of your value.”
“I know.”
And she did.
That was new.
Her phone rang.
Reeves.
Gregory Shaw had been located.
But before agents reached him, he mailed a package.
To Claire.
Inside was Grandma's missing original will.
And a handwritten note from Shaw:
MARTIN LIED TO ALL OF US. LOOK AT PAGE NINE.
Claire turned to page nine.
A name appeared as witness.
She read it twice.
General Mercer saw her expression.
“What?”
Claire handed him the page.
The witness was someone nobody had investigated.
Someone who had been inside the Bennett house the night Claire returned.
Someone who had watched everything quietly.
May you like
Claire's mother.
