Chapter 16 - The Families Behind the Files

The investigation eventually identified dozens of suspicious transactions.

Claire met some of the affected families at the resource center.

A military widow nearly lost land while handling her husband's affairs.

A deployed father discovered documents supposedly signed while he was overseas.

An elderly couple had been pressured into confusing transfers.

Their stories changed Claire's perspective.

Her family's betrayal remained personal.

But what happened afterward could become useful.

Tiffany began producing short educational videos about protecting documents and checking property records, working with qualified professionals to ensure the information was accurate.

One evening she showed Claire a draft.

“No crying thumbnail?”

Claire teased.

Tiffany rolled her eyes.

“I'm evolving.”

“Slowly.”

“Colonel, that's insubordination.”

“You're a civilian.”

“Then I'm safe.”

Their laughter filled Grandma's farmhouse.

Claire realized she had missed this.

Not the family she actually had.

The sister she might have had if resentment hadn't been encouraged between them.

Tiffany grew serious.

“I spent years competing with you.”

“I noticed.”

“Mom always said you thought you were better than us.”

“I never said that.”

“I know now.”

Tiffany looked down.

“I think she needed me to believe it.”

Claire reached across the table.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to touch her sister's hand.

“We don't have to keep being who they taught us to be.”

Tiffany squeezed her fingers.

Outside, construction lights illuminated the center.

A place born from attempted theft was becoming a place designed to protect people.

Grandma would have appreciated the irony.

But one final legal matter remained.

Sentencing and settlements would determine what happened to the people responsible.

And Claire had been asked whether she wanted to provide a victim statement.

She had spent her entire life swallowing what she wanted to say.

This time, she decided she would speak.
