Chapter 8 - The Will They Wanted Destroyed

The missing original will became the center of the case.

Without it, the family still possessed strong evidence.

With it, investigators could establish exactly what Eleanor intended before later documents began appearing.

Claire searched her memories.

Grandma distrusted digital records.

She liked paper.

Copies.

Backup copies.

“If there's an original,” Claire told Tiffany, “there's another copy.”

“Where?”

Claire thought.

Then she remembered Grandma's old Bible.

Not because Eleanor was hiding legal papers inside it.

Because Grandma used it as a code.

Birthdays beside certain passages.

Initials.

Dates.

Claire and Tiffany found the Bible among belongings stored in the basement.

Inside was a handwritten number.

314-27-9.

Tiffany frowned.

“A safe combination?”

Claire shook her head.

“Book, page, line?”

They eventually realized it referenced a deed archive.

A property Grandma owned under an old family trust.

There, behind a loose wooden panel in a farmhouse closet, investigators found a fireproof document case.

Inside was a certified copy of Eleanor's will.

And a video drive.

Claire pressed play.

Grandma appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably sharp.

“If Claire is watching this,” Eleanor said, “then somebody ignored me.”

Tiffany began crying.

Grandma explained everything.

She named the property.

The intended beneficiaries.

Her refusal to authorize a sale.

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“My granddaughter Claire has never surrendered her interest in this estate.”

The statement was devastatingly clear.

But Grandma wasn't finished.

She named one person she feared.

Martin Cole.

And another person she believed Martin was manipulating.

Richard Bennett.

May you like

Claire's father.
