Chapter 15 - The Ceremony

The invitation was to a community recognition ceremony honoring organizations supporting military families.
Claire initially wanted no part of it.
The center wasn't even fully open.
Mercer disagreed.
“This isn't an award for perfection.”
Claire looked at him.
“Good, because my family is underqualified.”
Mercer laughed.
Eventually, Claire agreed.
At the ceremony, Tiffany stood beside her.
Richard and Patricia sat several rows behind.
There were no livestreams.
No staged reactions.
No attempts to turn Claire into a family trophy.
That mattered.
When Claire's name was announced, Richard stood.
Claire noticed.
Five years earlier she might have needed that moment.
Now she simply appreciated it.
Afterward, Dad approached.
“I used to think rank was about importance.”
Claire waited.
“I understand now that I didn't know anything about your work.”
“No.”
“I should have asked.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
There was something almost freeing about a conversation without excuses.
Then Tiffany appeared.
“You two done being emotionally functional? Because it's unsettling.”
Claire laughed.
Richard actually smiled.
For a moment they resembled a family.
Not the old one.
Something new.
Something more cautious.
More truthful.
Then Claire noticed Patricia standing alone.
Her mother didn't approach.
Claire made the choice herself.
She walked over.
Patricia whispered, “I'm sorry.”
“I know.”
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Claire considered the question.
“Maybe forgiveness isn't one moment.”
Patricia nodded.
“Then I'll keep showing up.”
“That would be a start.”
They stood beside each other.
No hug.
Not yet.
But neither walked away.
Sometimes reconciliation didn't begin with an embrace.
May you like
Sometimes it began with staying.
