Chapter 12 - Page Nine

Patricia had witnessed Grandma's original will.

That meant she knew exactly what Eleanor intended.

Her claim that she believed Claire had surrendered the property collapsed.

Claire confronted her.

“Why?”

Patricia cried before answering.

Jealousy.

Not of money.

Of Eleanor and Claire.

Grandma had respected Claire's independence.

Patricia interpreted their closeness as rejection.

Every letter Eleanor sent Claire became another reminder that Claire had built a life outside Patricia's influence.

After Eleanor died, Patricia convinced herself that keeping the property near Tiffany would restore the family structure she wanted.

“It sounds insane when I say it now.”

“It was cruel when you did it.”

Patricia nodded.

Claire did not offer immediate forgiveness.

She offered truth.

“I love you. But I don't trust you.”

Her mother's face crumpled.

Claire continued.

“If we ever rebuild anything, it starts there.”

For the first time, Patricia accepted a boundary without arguing.

Meanwhile, Gregory Shaw surrendered.

His cooperation exposed additional transactions.

Families began recovering assets.

The case expanded beyond anything Claire imagined.

And online, the fifteen-second clip of General Mercer entering the Bennett home continued spreading.

People wanted interviews.

Television producers called.

Claire refused all of them.

Then Tiffany approached her with a different idea.

“Grandma wanted a resource center.”

“Yes.”

“What if the attention helps build it?”

Claire looked at her sister.

For once, Tiffany wasn't asking how viral something could become.

She was asking what good they could do with the attention.

Claire smiled.

May you like

“Now you're thinking like Grandma.”
