Chapter 10 - His Parents Chose a Side

I arrived with Gabriel.

Not alone.

Never alone anymore.

Javier sat at Elena’s kitchen table.

His father stood near the window.

“He wants us to say María knew,” Antonio said.

Javier shot him a furious look.

“I asked you to tell the truth.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Your truth?”

Javier turned toward me.

“This is what you wanted.”

I said nothing.

“You wanted my parents against me.”

“No,” Elena said.

Everyone looked at her.

She removed something from her handbag.

The original sale documents for their apartment.

Then she placed a series of messages beside them.

Messages from Javier.

Promises.

María already agreed.

The house will be yours.

Don’t contact her yet. I want to surprise her.

Elena looked at her son.

“You used us.”

Javier’s expression cracked.

“I was trying to save everything.”

“Everything except your marriage,” Antonio said.

“Everything except María,” Elena added.

Javier stood abruptly.

“You’re choosing her?”

Antonio answered quietly.

“We’re choosing the truth.”

Javier left.

For the first time, nobody followed him.

But before he disappeared, he turned to me.

“You think your father saved you.”

I held his gaze.

“He taught me not to surrender myself to someone who threatens to leave.”

Javier walked out.

Three days later, he filed a claim challenging my inheritance.

And suddenly my dead father was being dragged into court.
