Chapter 11 - The Attack on My Father

Javier’s argument was simple.
He claimed my father had intended the beach house to benefit our marriage.
He claimed Dad had verbally promised that Javier would eventually share ownership.
There was no written evidence.
But Javier produced witnesses.
Two acquaintances.
A former employee.
A family friend.
Each claimed to remember vague conversations.
I felt sick reading their statements.
Gabriel remained calm.
“People can say many things.”
“How do we prove Dad didn’t?”
“We don’t need to prove every conversation never happened.”
Then he smiled slightly.
“Your father prepared for this too.”
From his archive, Gabriel produced a recorded estate-planning meeting.
My father sat at a conference table.
Older.
Thinner.
Completely lucid.
The attorney asked:
“Do you intend María’s spouse, present or future, to acquire ownership rights in the coastal property?”
My father answered without hesitation.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the house is my daughter’s security. Marriage should add to her life, not require her to surrender what came before it.”
I cried when I heard his voice.
Then Dad added something none of us expected.
“If Javier loves María, he won’t need the house to prove it.”
The challenge collapsed soon afterward.
But the recording gave me something more valuable than victory.
It gave me my father’s voice one more time.

And in the final minute of that recording, he mentioned a promise I had completely forgotten.
