Chapter 14 - The Missing Money

Mateo had lied.

Not about the forged signature.

About the money.

He had received a substantial payment for facilitating the property structure.

He insisted he believed everything was legitimate.

But emails showed warning signs.

Questions he should have asked.

Documents he should have verified.

Gabriel told me something important.

“Being useful to us doesn’t automatically make him innocent.”

That sentence stayed with me.

People weren’t heroes simply because they eventually told the truth.

Sometimes they told the truth because the lie had become dangerous.

Mateo ultimately cooperated fully.

Records were produced.

Accounts examined.

Timelines reconstructed.

The more we learned, the clearer the pattern became.

Javier had spent nearly two years building a financial structure around property he never owned.

And somehow he had convinced himself that marriage made his actions acceptable.

When confronted with the complete record, his attorney changed strategy.

Settlement.

No claim to the beach house.

No challenge to my inheritance.

Full cooperation concerning the forged documents.

A clean divorce negotiation.

I signed nothing immediately.

I read every page.

Twice.

My father had taught me that too.

And when I finally signed the settlement weeks later, Javier asked for one final private conversation.
