Chapter 13 - The House Became Mine Again

Restoration began slowly.

Not demolition.

Restoration.

We repaired the shutters.

Repointed old stone.

Saved the handmade tiles.

Rebuilt damaged sections of the terrace using materials that matched Dad’s original work.

Daniel treated every detail with extraordinary care.

The lemon tree stayed.

Mom’s room stayed.

Dad’s study stayed.

But the house changed in another way.

It stopped feeling like a crime scene.

Sofia visited on weekends.

Elena came once.

She stood awkwardly at the gate.

“I brought something.”

It was the measuring tape.

The same one.

She placed it on the table.

“I thought you might want to throw it away.”

I looked at it.

Then laughed.

To my surprise, she laughed too.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

“Several.”

“Yes.”

That answer mattered.

She didn’t defend herself.

She apologized for entering the house as though she owned it.

For humiliating me.

For believing Javier instead of speaking to me.

For allowing entitlement to disguise itself as family loyalty.

I accepted the apology.

Not because everything was repaired.

Because forgiveness and access are different things.

Elena could be forgiven.

The house remained mine.

Then she handed me an envelope.

“I found this among Javier’s things.”

Inside was a handwritten list.

Bank accounts.

Payments.

Names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Mateo.

But beside it was a figure Mateo had never disclosed.

When Gabriel saw the amount, he immediately called him.

And the story took another turn.
