Chapter 9 - The Twelve-Suite Hotel

The developer had been promised vacant possession of the property.
Not eventually.
Immediately.
Javier had represented that I supported the redevelopment.
He had shown them emails supposedly written by me.
They were fake.
He had described my father’s house as “underutilized family property.”
He had promised demolition could begin within weeks.
The woman placed renderings on Sofia’s dining table.
I stared at them.
Where Dad’s lemon tree stood, the drawings showed an infinity pool.
Where Mom’s kitchen had been, there was a cocktail lounge.
The study had become a reception desk.
The terrace where my parents celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary was labeled:
EVENT SPACE — CAPACITY 120.
I couldn’t speak.
The representative quietly closed the folder.
“We did not know you hadn’t consented.”
I believed her.
Not because I trusted corporations.
Because Javier had lied consistently enough that the pattern was obvious.
“What happens now?”
“We withdraw.”
“And the advance?”
“We will seek recovery from Mr. Alvarez.”
Another wall closed around Javier.
But that evening Elena called me.
Her voice trembled.
“María, please come.”
“What happened?”
“It’s Javier.”
I stood.
“What did he do?”
“He’s here.”
“Where?”
“At our temporary apartment.”
Then she whispered:
May you like
“He says if we don’t help him, he’ll lose everything.”
