Chapter 5 - His Mother Finally Read the Fine Print

Elena arrived at Gabriel’s office at 9:12 the next morning.
She came without Javier.
That told me everything.
Antonio followed her.
She placed a contract on the table.
“What is this?”
Mateo had apparently sent them copies overnight.
I remained seated.
“You should ask your son.”
“He said this house was ours.”
“That’s what you told me.”
Elena looked sick.
“He said you agreed.”
“I didn’t.”
Antonio sat down heavily.
“Javier told us María wanted us closer.”
I looked at him.
“Did that sound believable?”
His face showed the answer.
Elena whispered, “He convinced us to sell our apartment.”
For the first time, I saw something beneath her arrogance.
Fear.
She had sold her home because she trusted her son.
That did not erase what she had done to me.
But it changed what I understood.
“You still walked into my house and planned renovations without speaking to me.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
“You told me not to embarrass myself.”
“Yes.”
“You treated me like an obstacle.”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I had imagined this moment differently.
I thought I would enjoy watching Elena discover that Javier had lied to her.
I didn’t.
Betrayal looked ugly on everyone.
Antonio pushed the contract away.
“What happens now?”
Gabriel answered.
“The transfer stops.”
“And our apartment?”
“That is a separate matter.”
Elena looked at me.
“We have nowhere to live after the end of next month.”
I almost said, Not my problem.
Then I remembered my father.
Compassion was not surrender.
I could help someone without handing them my life.
“I’ll help you find somewhere temporary,” I said. “But you are not moving into Dad’s house.”
Elena nodded.
No argument.
No insult.
Just a quiet nod.
Then the office door opened.
Javier stood there.
His eyes moved from his parents to Mateo to me.
“So this is what we’re doing?”
Antonio stood.
“What did you do?”
Javier ignored him.
He looked only at me.
“You turned my entire family against me.”
I stood too.
“No, Javier.”
I slid the development contract across the table.
“You did that yourself.”
May you like
And when Elena read the final page aloud, everyone learned Javier’s betrayal went much further than the beach house.
